How close is this Coach to losing

IDK about all this....but I ask myself

Why can't we win a game we're not supposed to win under CBJ? UK beat Mizz (#25) last night. Utah (#18) stomped the daylights out of Oregon (#12). Last week Ole Miss beat Alabama (#2).

Why does it seem that these come from behind miracles we see so many other teams perform are always lost on UT? Why do these miracles happen "to" us instead of "for" us? Can you imagine UT being 4th and 14, trying to convert and end up throwing a TD for a 1 point victory??? Not in this lifetime or the one to come.

Coaching!

Yep. I like Butch but he is out of his league in the SEC.

It hasn't always been that way. It started with the curse of firing Fulmer and continues through a series of piss poor coaching choices by an administration that doesn't care.[

It started with Fulmer, I remember several times where Fulmer was dominated by a lesser foe.Do you remember Steve Tanneyhill? (just 1 for example)

I am not a Fulmer fan but he never lost to Steve Tannyhill. Tannyhill only won in 92 after Majors came back from his surgery.

I think we've seen signs he has already lost some. Butch needs to swallow his pride and acknowledge his responsibility for this loss, without anymore of the weasel words and excuses. The players, like the fans, will be watching what he says and does after this. If he trots out more excuses, you will start to see players giving up on the field. See Dooley's loss to UK for an example of what that looks like.

Excellent post.

Yeah right, that winning TD on 4th and 14 was only a nightmare by the DBs and had nothing to do with us only rushing 3 at the QB and playing prevent D. That's on the coaches.

Seriously - Grier whenever pressured was having serious issues throwing. Why on earth would you not bring some heat on that play? Maybe ... Maybe if Magitt was playing this scheme could have worked - but we might as well had not rushed anybody at all.

The biggest mistake he made this year was replacing Crowder. Coach Jones damaged his Team's Leadership far more than most will ever know.

CBJ wanted HIS players on the field. That's why a lot of players left the team in the last 2 years. We are 'young' because CBJ has made this team 'young'. But 'young' guys know they have next year and the year after. Yes, underclassmen have less to lose than upperclassmen.

The Butch hatred is magnified on a site like this. Your average fan is disappointed in the loss but they aren't coming here to this forum and arming themselves with pitchforks like quite a few are. The players are probably far more resilient than the fans are.

Not so fast

Every UT fan I know is ready to fire up the moving vans

Hell, one set his UT flag on fire

People aren't happy

Jones is going anywhere. We're not paying another buyout. But I do think there will be 1 maybe 2 assistant coaches gone after the year.

Butch is very similar to Fulmer. He would be best served by finding a dynamic OC/DC combo with autonomy to run their systems. He should act as CEO and focus on recruiting while reading a book on game management. That would serve Butch's best interests.

This is exactly what we need to be successful. We can't win the SEC with this Staff/System

I would make my own thread, but I don't have the post count.

I think the problem is, butch has shown us he can be a good coach, he can get more out of less talent, and we can compete with less talent. Case in point Georgia 2013. We played with heart, we played to win, we did more with less, we adjusted our play calling to match the talent on the field. I, like many of us, felt like I witnessed something in Neyland I haven't felt in years. Good things coming.

That's why I am pissed. I know butch can coach like his life depends on it, I've seen it with my own two eyes. So frustrating.

Locate your talent. Identify your playmakers. Get the ball in their hands. Identify strengths and build on them. Find your weaknesses and work your ass off to minimize them.

I think we all agreed the offense with Worley was a real head scratcher. So we run a read option with a QB the entire nation knows will not run it.

Round hole. square peg.

What happened to the team that played Georgia 2013?

Georgia was ravaged by injury in 2013, played poorly, and still beat us. They made Jancek look like a fool in the fourth quarter, just like McElwain did yesterday.

I think there is more to the Crowder story than any of us know. Check back on this in a year or two.

Butch apparently disagrees with you - or at least he did. Uncertain if he's having second thoughts.

“Everything is about fit,” Jones said. “The outside world wants to look at résumé, who’s the hottest thing going.

“There’s some great offensive coordinators out there, but for us everything is about a fit within our staff.”

This.

Me and my Dad were texting about it (...I am in college. And he's the only sane vol-fan I can reliably contact). We both have been pulled much closer to leaning on the fence, but we still support Butch. It just seems...odd now.
As my dad says:
"I really like Butch, but he needs to get a big win this season. Probably Alabama or Georgia"

He will not get those wins. He's not the kind of guy that knows how to do that.

At this point, it seems like we still don't have the right guys at key positions. CB is still a bit young - even Cam shows he's not the god we all placed on a pedestal this preseason.

Dobbs clearly is not a good passer, but Dormady is only a freshman - which is bad.

LB just needs more experience overall...DLine needs more experience...OLine needs more depth.

Basically, we have a really good WR corps, and a good safety lineup...and a couple decent lineups.
