“He is a ‘yes sir, yes ma’am’ type of kid, very respectful,” his mom, Monique, said. “But when it comes to sports, he is very prideful, very competitive. That’s where the other Chris comes out.” That sequence at the 7-on-7 tournament also reminded Brazzell that he could be overlooked if he didn’t make his presence known. That lesson produced the fiery receiver Tennessee fans will see this season. “My son is a dog,” his mom said. “When it comes to sports, he’s a dog.”
Brazzell gets it honest. His father was an NFL receiver. His mother’s family includes an NBA Hall of Famer. But Brazzell has had to prove himself again and again. He went from a small private school to the highest level of Texas high school football. And he went from a little-recruited freshman at Tulane to a transfer virtually every SEC school wanted.
Now approaching his debut season at Tennessee, beginning with the Aug. 31 opener against Chattanooga, he faces a familiar challenge. “I’m back in the same mindset,” said Brazzell, a redshirt sophomore. “I’m trying to show everybody that I’m not just a small-school type of kid. I can do it on a big stage. That’s my motivation.”
