I am a Miami Hurricane fan... I come in peace with no intention to create an argument, unless we are arguing over who hates UF more.

Anyway, we are looking to hire an OC/QB coach and Randy Sanders seems to be the first name in the rumor mill. It doesnt seem like it will happen, and I hope it doesnt, but the rumor has been brought up a few times by different sources and I came on here to hear opinions by people who actually watched his playcalling and such. Hopefully to be pleasantly surprised and feel a bit more comfortable about these rumors that are swirling around.

Anyways, all opinions are welcome.

I think he is a very good position coach that probably suffered from declining talent more than anything else.

I don't think you are going to find a lot of pro Randy Sanders folks here at Volnation. However, on the good side:
1) Many people think his bad play calling was driven by the handcuffs put on him by Phil Fulmer while he was here.
2) He did do a good job (preliminarily) with Eric Ainge and Brent Shaeffer in their freshman years.
3) The QBs at Kentucky have looked pretty good under him and Woodson credits him for his vast improvement his last two years at KY.

But . . . On the bad side:
1) Many people say he did not pay attention to detail and practices were not run as effectively as when Cutcliffe was OC
2) There were a lot of sloppy mistakes by our offense during his tenure.
3) There was a general decline in offensive production during his tenure as OC.

No one really knows how good he is as an OC... obviously not as good as Cut... but he was Fulmer's scape goat no doubt... and probably wasn't given free reign like Cut was. So we can't really answer that question very well. Some will - they say "omg he sux! Remember '05!" but they're the ones that probably are still angry over Fulmer's firing.

Honestly, I think he got the short end of the stick here. He seems to be an above average QB coach, and his OC skills are yet to be determined. I don't think many conclusions can be drawn from his time as OC here. Fulmer was more OC than RS during that time.

All in all, I would say not the worst choice, but pretty unproven.

He loves him some bubble screen!! He would probably be fine if Shannon is looking for a "yes man".... He's almost as exciting as watching the grass grow.

Good QB coach. Could be a decent OC if given full control and had a mentor to guide him.

Not the worst hire possible. He had a good run at UT, but was handcuffed most of the time.

His best showing was in 2001 against Michigan in the Capital One bowl. That was all Sanders. But he had a ton of talent, which helps.

Randy Sanders coached one really good game and that was the NC game against FSU. I think that was his first official game as the OC not sure though?

I wouldnt get him for a OC, but you guys couldnt go wrong with him as QB coach.

Im not worried about talent. Shannon and all our assistant coaches can recruit their ass off. Im just worried about putting players in a position to use their talent and having the athletes know what the hell they are doing.

If you go to a board and post the question "How bad is Randy Sanders?", then you pretty much already know the answer.

Really though he is a pretty solid coach. He has been around some very good ones and should do ok with the talent U of M is bringing in. He knows the game. He is not a chest bumper. Great guy all the way around.
