How bad is it that we are playing so...

The constant myth and false drumbeat about frosh should be unable to start for the Vols is thoroughly discredited with your above post. It's appreciated. A good coach and staff finds a way to get the best players on the field and use them correctly no matter their time on campus.
Correct......Tua at Bama and Lawrence at Clemson just for beginners

I think most of us have rebuild fatigue. We've gone through this now with 3 straight coaches in a 10 year time period (I don't count Kiffin since he was only hear for one year). We're tired of hearing "we're young." "We're inexperienced." We're this, we're that. I'm at the point now where I don't even want to hear it anymore. I just want the damn thing fixed. Sorry, if that makes me irrational then so be it. I just want the damn thing fixed. I don't care what it takes.
Well it's getting fixed ...of this I'm certain but our competitors are adding high-performance players at about the same rate. It'll balance out in a year or two.

Things are different now. High school programs have gotten much better with their S&C programs. Kids are training on their own much more than they used to. Plus with more and more kids enrolling early, getting into the S&C program sooner, and participating in spring practice they're a little more than merely "freshmen" by the time they get to the regular season. Elijah Simmons is a true freshmen and he's already one of, if not the strongest guy on the team.
Speaking of Elijah this could be the "diamond in the rough" type. He's just gotta get used to the competition which will take some time but we're talking about a player who could anchor the middle of UT's DLine for 3 years or more. I wouldn't want to be an opposing center when Elijah is in his junior and senior years. Another thing is he doesn't appear to be too tall but rather short for his weight which means he has a low center of gravity. In addition to that it's reported that he has excellent speed for his size. This guy, big and fast, gonna have more than a few tricks up his sleeve with the proper coaching.

Remember Big Dan William's? That's kind of what I'm hoping Elijah develops into.

“How bad is it that we are playing so many young players in our 2 deep?”

It’s not bad at all. The players Tennessee has been playing with haven’t been getting it done. I’m glad to see a bunch of new guys.

Sure it could make for some losses that Tennessee might not should lose........but heck they been doing that anyway. And hey maybe things will be better, they will grow, develop and become really good.

I think Butch Jones dispelled the myth that recruiting rankings equates to success.

You still have to develop talent but Butch wasted talent better than any other. Any competent coach would have had us win the SEC twice.

Our freshmen aren’t as talented as UGA and Alabama unfortunately.
Recruiting rankings. The 2019 class would be Top 3 if they were comparable.
Wright, Wanya, Tootoot, Crouch, Burrell and Gray are the guys starting or pushing for the most PT. They are very talented and all highly rated besides Burrell. If we were throwing the whole signing class on the field you would have a much better point.

I think Butch Jones proved that “myth”. We saw what the team looked like in 2013 when he didn’t have much talent on the field and then what they looked like in 2015 and 2016 with a lot of talented players. Now I know his coaching didn’t improve any over those 3 years but he went from 5 wins to 9 wins and that was due to talent increasing

That was my point but I didn’t word it well originally. Top to bottom UGA and Bama are better. However, I’m as excited as anybody about our emerging freshmen potential contributors. Not only that but I trust our coaches talent evals of lower graded players too.

Stars do matter, HOWEVER, one must consider the types of 3 stars that Pruitt likes to sign. Harrison, Simmons, and Means for example. These three either have elite speed, elite strength, elite size, or elite athleticism....or a combination of these things. The 2020 class has a couple of guys such a Jimmy Calloway that run 4.4 in the 40 or faster. That is an elite measurable that cannot be taught. These guys can be molded into fantastic players. Pruitt has an eye for the right talent. Speed never had a bad day as David Cutcliffe once said. Neither did elite size, strength or athleticism.

many young players in our 2 deep?

Take into account that Alabama has 18 true Fr listed in their 1st released depth chart and I don't feel so bad about our team. Georgia only has 7 this year in their 2 deep, not sure about the gators. Georgia is the team to beat this year in the SEC, Bama could struggle some if a couple of their key guys get injured. We picked a good year to have a weaker schedule as it will allow the young guys to have some success I feel.

First, it's good for the future and will pay dividends in 1-2 years.

Second, let's be real. We'd all be ecstatic to have Alabama's freshmen comprising our teams' rosters right frickin now.

I believe they have a walkon as their TE backup, they are going to start 2 Fr at LB without much depth behind them and rumor is that a Fr may be their best DL this season. After Harris at RB they don't have anything but Fr and they do not have an SEC caliber QB backing Tua up this season. Tua's lower half is made of glass and I think he'll play banged up all year. If Bama gets hit with the injury bug this year, and it appears they already are, I think they will struggle and could lose a couple of games this year because of it. They simply can't afford many more injuries.

Well I don't want to see anyone get hurt but I certainly hope they struggle like you're predicting. I hope you're right!
