The Pride would have to go through Down the Field five or six times for him to make the turn, compared to just two for CPF. But if Mangino misses the turn, it's going to get expensive when his momentum takes out the percussion section...

I can't agree more. I think this is almost as important as coaching abilities. I don't see how coaches like Mangino, Friedgen, etc. get by with their weight issues. They are good coaches who could excel (especially recruiting) further if they were more presentable.
Say what you will about Ron Zook, but he could recruit, had tenacity and could keep up with his own players in the weight room.
