Knights Inn on Callahan. Active nightlife there.

Also Scottish Inn on Callahan. Ask for the Johnny Majors suite.

I hope you're kidding!! Scottish Inn & Knights Inn make Holiday Inns look decent!!
TYS in Blount Co has decent motels around the airport

Holiday Inn on Emory Road in North Knoxville (Powell) has rooms available at $139/night. I've stayed there before and it's not bad. 20 minutes to downtown, safe, and a few places to eat around there.

Since you're coming from NC, I'd go with Strawberry Plains exit. There's a LaQuinta Inn there, $119 a night with rooms available. Stayed there a couple of years ago and it was good. Probably 20 minutes to downtown.

Knoxville Marriott (formerly Hyatt Regency) downtown has rooms still available, but $260/night. Convenient to catch the bus close by going to the game. (not sure if they have shuttle service to the game).

Other than that, you're looking at Cedar Bluff or further out for a decent hotel room at a reasonable price, and you'll have to deal with west Knoxville traffic.

Sleep in your car at the Walmart parking lot..it will motivate to get a room well in advance

We used to say at the Hilton Garden Inn on Parkside until they started a two night minimum.. so now we found another good place on down from there, still close to Parkside Grill- good food.

LOL. The Magnuson used to be the old Howard Johnson next to West Town Mall. Last time I checked the lobby bar was a cougar bar called Babe's Lounge. Used to go there once in a while when I was in college at UT with some buddies just so we could get a good story out of the night. Priceless.

Magnuson was a Ramada Inn earlier. I don't remember it being a HoJo, but there was a Howard Johnson's just a little further west on Kingston Pike.
