No kidding. He may explode when he reads this.

I mean, far be it for me to disagree with an Actual Working Journalist or anything, but the offensive line has been the absolute epicenter of Tennessee's problems for years. I just can't see how anybody could look at the performance of that unit and think that they've been receiving "top-notch" coaching.

Me? Explode? You'd think I might, but there's a couple things that you need to know about me.

1) I rarely raise my voice, and although I look insane I'm normally fairly mellow
2) Mrs. OV went way above and beyond what she would normally do tonight.... and by that I mean she brought me a large pizza from the best pizza shop in the state of Ohio.

One more thing.

I know firsthand what it's like to coach the game of football. I know what it's like to have everything you do second-guessed by pinheads who know nothing. There's a reason why I refuse to blast coaches here or elsewhere; I believe there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes than even those "in the know" would ever acknowledge.

Adkins is the only one I've ever repeatedly blasted, and the feeble performance on the field over his tenure at UT is justification enough.

"Explode" was maybe the wrong word, but I know how you feel about Adkins. I'll freely admit that I'm a know-nothing pinhead, but even to me, our OL line play has been terrible for a long time.

I honestly have no idea how anybody could have watched UT football games over the last half decade or so and come away with the impression that our offensive line coach was any good at all.

I would be extremely disappointed if Adkins were retained. We haven't been able to line up and really pound the ball on a consistent basis since 2004 at the latest. Some might go back further, to 2001. Adkins' lines play soft.

Overlooked in the Adkins debate is the more damaging indictment of delaying the implementation of the young talent. In the end that seems to be "the thing" that brought this program to a stalemate and damaged the Vols recruiting efforts.

Agreed! Bye Adkins

If you had put this years OL in black and jerseys and watched them on the field, there is no way you would have pegged them as a UT team. That's a shame. Completely unrecognizable by previous UT standards.

I doubt lex was referring to something adkins did. If they retain adkins, hopefully he is reassigned to another position. I think they're keeping him because he's in on some of our key recruits.

I would counter that UT's recruiting on the O-Line has dropped off significantly with the resurgence of Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.

Look at these guys in a uniform up close compared with LSU or Florida -- and it's not close.

Isn't recruiting part of Adkins's job? If recruiting dropped off, it's partly his fault. You also pretty much said that Adkins never bought into Clawson's system. Maybe that's why our players never bought in. It just confirms again that Clawson never had a shot here.

I wouldn't say I am "big" on Scott. I just meant he is the only coach that it wouldn't bother me if he stayed. He is a above average recruiter, and from everything I saw our WR's showed signs of progress throughout the year.

With that said...if he isn't retained or if he goes to BGSU...I won't lose any sleep. If Adkins is...I'll probably not lose sleep, but I'll go to bed real angry...

Very observant. Whomever gave Hammy that info was spot on. Developing talent and special teams were absolutely the blind spots in Phillip's faith in his ability to 'turn it around'.

When Lane said, "I promise, we'll be physical"... I was intrigued... Then he started hiring top notch talent to coach this team, to develop the talent, and I knew we were heading in the right direction..

Obviously a work in it's earliest stages, but the right steps have been taken so far.

Good read Griff.

Also I have to give you kudos. Most writers put up there blogs or editorials and thats that but you post it here for some harsh critics. Got my respect for that as little as that is worth lol.

Great post!

Mike, it's admirable that come here and respond to tough critics. It adds a lot to VN, imo.

Thanks for taking to time to do that!

FWIW, I'm not convinced that last year is all Adkins' fault, but it's hard to blame a scheme on the short yardage problems we've had. That's all fundamentals.

Maybe lane wants to play a good game, instead of talking about one and looking at the film.:)

I did notice the WR play got a tad better as the season progressed, but imo they were still behind in comparisson to last season. I didn't know if there was something ab the guy I was missing. I don't see adkins retaining his job, but what do I know?:)

Griff,
Normally I agree with you, but I'm not buying your take on Adkins. Perhaps if Adkins is retained he'll coach TEs. One thing that will probably help the o-line next year is the nastiness that Yaw Yaw Yaw Yaw Football will bring to the d-line. The o-line will be forced to man up and get physical or they're going to get creamed.

What I like about the hiring and back room manuevers is that there seems to be a plan versus just grasping. My issue with Fulmer is outside of having Cut save his butt, he just didn't have a plan to get things moving again. I liked Fulmer, but his obvious lack of a coherent plan is where he finally lost me.

You make it seem that it's just the boosters that want Coach O, plus you make that getting Ed would be a negative thing

Have you ever heard the moron speak? That's the negative, he does seem to be a good coach and better recruiter, that's the positive.

If Adkins stays he will have a new boss. That new boss has, I believe from what we are hearing, high expectations. With the hiring of NFL coaches, the whole standard is raised. Adkins may step up his coaching and that will be good for him and this football program. It is yet to be seen, but it looks like the good ole boy network is out... excellence is in.

The route running improved, as well as some dropped balls not being as rampant. Also, he wasn't necessarily getting to work with the cream of the crop either.

It may all be moot point, because he has been with Clawson a while, and I'm sure he will be/already has been contacted to go to BGSU.

one more thing........i do find it a bit amusing that Hamilton hired someone to tell him something he could have gotten for FREE right here!!!!!!!!!!!!

lastly.....i also fine it refreshing that our AD is willing to step out and at least find out for himself what kind of shape this program is really in, rather than being a staunchy old fart that's too stubborn to see the forest for the trees. At least he'll ask the right questions and take a long look in the mirror before making a decision.

Hammy is coming out of this, really, looking pretty darn good.

Hamilton thought outside the box. He didn't keep it in the mafia family, for that i salute him.

As far as consulting someone for information about whats wrong with your program. Internet message board or credible nfl source. Volnation is full of good info, but thats stretching it a bit.
