Matt Campbell should be everyone's #1 if they follow college football. He's still young, he can coach his ass off, his players play well above their ability, he develops players well, runs a good program, and consistently outperforms all expectations. Those that say he wouldn't come here are incorrect. For the right salary, Campbell would come to the Hill. He was a huge fan of Johnny Majors and has deep respect for him. Campbell isn't as big of a pipe dream as some would think. We just have to PAY for him.
Either you pay on the front end or the back end. How many more times are they going to have to do this coaching search to realize that it's better to pay on the front end so you don't HAVE the back end every few years? Maybe the right one's have finally figured that out. Campbell in Knoxville would make a LOT of other SEC head coaches very uncomfortable.
If you can't get him then you shoot for Luke Fickell. He's similar but I like Campbell just a little more. Solid head coach with a good track record.
Make a call to Tom Allen but I don't see him leaving IU for anywhere other than Michigan or Penn State. But he would be a great hire if he were willing to leave.
Jamey Chadwell hasn't ever been in serious trouble with the NCAA. If you look into the issues it was with the entire athletic department and not just the football program. I think his "issues" are a non-factor. This guy is a great motivator, has a fun team to watch, and if you listen to him talk he is very articulate and you can tell the guy just "gets it." I would be 100% fine with Chadwell because he's at least a HEAD coach at a university and they are playing well over their ski's. I mean that motto, "Anytime, Anywhere" is perfect and the way they took down a very talented BYU team on such short notice was very impressive.
Lane Kiffin would be very interesting. He has expressed regret over leaving the first time but many that can see things for what they are understand that the USC job was his dream and don't blame him for that. His conduct with the co-eds here and some of his off field antics were more worrying to me. But he's older now - and hopefully wiser. I like the cockiness and his attitude and his constant trolling on Twitter. He reminds me of a young Steve Spurrier who didn't have to take everything so friggin seriously. We would at least be very fun to watch with Kiffin at the helm here again. But I know there's probably like a 2% chance of that ever happening.
Joe Brady is the only assistant I would even consider and I think he would have bigger fish to fry than at UT. I think he would prefer to stay in the NFL but his talent is undeniable and he will be highly sought after by many teams in the near future.
Tom Herman may not be that well liked at Texas now - and they would have fired him if they could have got Urban. But, he can coach and would be a solid hire for us right now. I would take him in 2 nanoseconds over what is still there for the moment.
The Right Rev is very polarizing and I'm not 100% sold on him but I don't doubt we'd be in much better shape and way more fun to watch with him at the helm.
Jimmy Lake was promoted from within at Washington after being a spectacular DC for several years. He's not had a lot of HC experience and he's a defensive coach so that's why he would be lower on the list but still definitely worth a call.
Gus Malzhan wouldn't be the most exciting option out there but he would for sure be a solid hire if we miss out on all of those above him on my list which I think is a virtual impossibility. Freeze or Chadwell would take the job.
Billy Napier is a bit of a wildcard and I like Chadwell better but he's done good things at ULL and will get a P5 head coaching gig soon.
Doc Holliday has a great track record and could be got cheap. Plus his name is Doc Holliday and the merchandise would fly off the shelves. Seriously though - good player development, great recruiter, and he could come in here for 5 years before he retires and get things back on track.
