Wes Rucker tweets:

Hopson watched every shot he took at the SECt — asked for film on his own — and discovered his footwork was the problem. Fixed now, he says.

Now I've never played basketball beyond the scrub/recreational level, so maybe I just missing something. But exactly how does a player of Hopson's caliber, who has played high-level basketball for years, suddenly pick up bad "footwork"? I would think that by now the shooting setup and motion should be fairly instinctive to him.

I'm with you in not really knowing myself, but my first thought was of a batter's swing or a pitcher's delivery. Sometimes it just happens.

Guys will start incidentally turning their hips, so motion isn't aligned. Wrong foot gets forward at times. Setups get messed up. Square hips and shoulders requires much practice and is easy to screw up.

Exactly,I play basketball and it's very easy to do something small like that and miss.

My only problem is why did he wait to ask for the tape after the SEC Tourney - why not after the Ole Miss game or even the LSU game.

Come on!

I get how athletes sometimes have prolonged slumps which cause them to reassess their fundamentals (e.g., baseball hitters, golfers, and the like). But generally that's not like an on-off switch where you suddenly can't hit any shots for a weekend. And I hardly ever hear people talking about bad footwork for basketball shooters.

Poor setup causes the vast majority of great shooter slumps.

Probably because they had to play the very next day and their focus would be on their opponent.

If he realized what he was doing wrong with his shot and fixes it in practice why are you people complaining?

Fixing your shot in practice is easy...the hard part is the pressure of game time. If he can identify the bad habits and find a solution, he'll be tough to contain.

You shoot out of it, so he'll get in the gym and fix it hopefully. Also, try to shoot with your feet aligned properly and then try again with your feet cocked to the side or off balance perhaps. It's a legitimate cause for poor shooting.

I had a few games last year where I couldn't hit a shot so I went in the gym and found out that i wasn't keeping my elbow straight. I started shooting with my elbow in and my shot was fine. Maybe the same thing happens with hopson.

Do college teams have "shooting coaches" like baseball has hitting/pitching coaches? It seems like most of UT coaches are quality X and O's guys and recruiters but have never heard anything specific about our coaches being teachers in terms of fundamentals, etc.

Yeah,it's not that hard to fix,you just start a bad habit with your shot and don't notice it. When you realize it,it's easy to fix.

He just needs to get his confidence back up. That building was playing games with his head and I'm sure the poor shooting just snowballed. This is a good sign, hope it gets him back on the right track. We need him to contribute if we want to win, it's that simple.

Well, we need everyone on the floor to contribute if we want to win.
