Hope we keep John Chavis....

First of all, I personally don't think there is much of a chance Leach is hired. I will be surprised if he is not at TT again next year with a nice new contract. I personally don't want him anyways.

As far as Chavis goes, I think he is a good DC. He could be better than the next one we have when it is all said and done. I don't think he will be retained though. I am not sure he would stay if offered. I think he is ready to move on if he don't get offered the HC job.

Chavis seems to be coaching better since he moved back up to the booth in mid-season.

EDIT- Tenn is 116th Total Offense, 114th Scoring Offense just in case you are interested.
Wow. I didn't realize how pitiful are our opposition's offenses. Except for UF and UGA. I suddenly don't feel as wonderful about our defense anymore.

Kinda like when I found out BYU beat UCLA 59-0.

We lost to UCLA and Wyoming, BYU beat them 103-0.

Chavis is borrowing the same U-Haul that Fulmer is using to clean his office out. My aunt's uncles cousin that works at the rental place told me that.;)

I have trouble imagining a coaching scenario where Chavis would fit. I just don't think that the staff could find chemistry given his dedication to Phillip over the years. To his credit: our defense has been the most consistent factor for well over a decade and should be thanked largely for the National Championship. I know we have played some pretty bad offensive teams, but remember that our own O can't stay on the field either -- which makes it even tougher for a defense to rank highly. The big negative this year was the piss-poor second half against UCLA. What was Chief thinking???

All in all, I think he's gone. But, I'll be one to give him props on some darn good defensive teams over the years.

Per Heather Harrington, there is going to be a John Pennington article this week that exposes just how much of a recruiting failure Chavis has been. Apparently, Chavis has only recruited 4 players in the last 4 years...

Is this because he doesn't recruit well, or doesn't try to recruit?
I've heard this knock on Chief but not the exact reason behind it.

If the recruiting issues with Chavis are true, than that is reason enough to make a change. You cannot thrive in the SEC without everyone being at least an effective and enthusiastic recruiter. Plus the D staff collectively seems to be getting a bit long in the tooth. I have no issues with having some older, wiser members on the staff, but the whole staff shouldn't be at the trail end of their careers. Defense is a bit of a young man's profession.

His players on defense always seem to have great admiration for Chavis. So I would not think that he was incapable of recruiting. I assume that he must not have any passion for the process.

He should go coach Linebackers in the NFL. He's had the opportunity in the past and now would be the time to make the jump.

I'd vote to retain Chief as DC if he would PUBLICLY ADMIT that he deliberately runs that STUPID SOFT ZONE all game, and vows to NEVER run it again.

We need a new era, not just a new HC. In order to do that, house needs to be cleaned from top all the way down to the water boy.

The chance Lane Kiffin would take another job where he keeps the incumbent defensive coordinator=The chance I choose to jab my eyes out with railroad spikes.

Good point. I also can't see Chavis fitting in with Kiffin and whoever else he brings if he's hired.
