Hooker waived by Lions

You know I didn’t think about that. If Nico balls out at UCLA that’s gonna look really bad. It may be time for Heupel to look into getting rid of Halze and maybe changing his system a little.
I'd not thought about that mainly because I think Nico lacks the drive to excel in college or pro ball.

He's very gifted and could push himself more, IMO. If he balls out at UCLA and looks like a pro QB in their scheme, it will make me wonder if we're getting the best from our athletes or doing the best for their development.

Obviously, Heupel's history says he knows QBs and his success says he can win, but the most elite athletes in the country WANT to be coached up to their full potential for the next level.

I tend to agree about Nico and his drive but nothing gives a person more drive than having their name dragged across the mud on national tv, it may give him the drive to prove himself and prove others wrong.
I was just what if'ing but it would be bad if he did because ESPN would be more than happy to put out articles about how TN was the problem.

Wasn't that one of the reasons Arch went to TX? Said he wanted to play in a pro style offense and get coached up?

A wee little spark ignites a big fire....

Recruiting e-lite players, now burning to the ground.... 😉

I hate the NFL. There isn’t a single great QB in the league anymore. Unfortunately for Hendon, he was asked to perform for the first time in 3 years, surrounded by teammates who are most likely getting cut, also. It’s political and always has been.

Arch's family knows QB preparation and likely had the idea to find somewhere he didn't HAVE to start for a couple of years. Despite what Peyton did at UT, it wasn't the family's plan, nor Peyton's plan, for him to be a freshman starter. Eli sat for 2 years, I think, at Ole Miss.

Arch not only chose TX because he could sit but also because Sark is running "the process" he learned from St Nick to stress fundamentals and execution and recruit (throw money) at a high level.

Arch has essentially had near zero pressure until this Saturday. 2 years of mostly just working on fundamentals, being a college kid, and learning a "pro set-ish" offense (not to mention having Eli and Peyton and Archie on speed dial for anything that he didn't understand.)

If Arch tanks this year, he'll still be a high draft pick but there will be whispers about Milwee because Ewers arguably underachieved and if Arch does too.......

Arch also had the ability to sit because of his family situation. They had money and pro players in the family. Some of these kids are trying to get to that big pay day to help out their family.
But yeah if Arch looks bad there will be questions but the Manning name holds a lot of weight so he'll be given a pass for a little while.
I'll probably have both games on.

I mean....is this really surprising? The Lions signed Bridgewater last year to be the backup for the playoff run and he had retired and coached high school football all season. Seems like that was a pretty clear sign he had no future in Detroit.

I think he'd do well in the UFL, maybe the CFL but the QB play in the CFL is better than the UFL.

The issue for Hooker is age. He's already 27.

Jalen Hurts is 27 and in the same year Hooker had his breakout year at UT, 2022, Hurts was in the running for NFL Player of the Year.

Josh Dobbs seems like a veteran, journeyman backup but he's only 30.

Hooker got a late start for a QB.

It's weird that in my brain Dobbs seems younger than Hooker.

For sure, though Arch supposedly has a large NIL deal also. And Arch is as close to a "sure thing on Sunday" QB that I can imagine. He's supposedly as bright as Peyton, as cool headed as Eli, and can run even better than Archie.

I'm going to miss some of the Saturday games because of a family obligation. SERIOUSLY, is the portal closed for transferring to another family??? 😁

I think Nico was the first QB that actually fit the Heupel system. He had a decent first year and I was expecting a major jump this year. Well he did jump...and it left us back in the QB purgatory. He really hasn't had the guy he wants to run the offense. The light went ON for Hooker while he was here, but we can't expect that to happen every year. We haven't had a star at QB for a long time. Maybe FB will finally be the one. I really want to see what Heupel can do with real QB talent. Who knows, maybe on of the younger QB's will make a big step this year if JA doesn't get in gear.

Pretty self explanatory

Hopefully he gets picked up somewhere and gets a shot to resurrect his career.

Judging by the calendar though may be a stretch.
Dobbs parlayed almost a decade as a backup. That's the best job in the NFL. Sit on the bench talking to your money guy about plowing more of this week's check into Nvidia and Bitcoin while you watch the game.

Anyone know how Sampson is doing ? All I ever see about the Clown Browns is the QB fiasco
As much as they slob Sanders knob they should just start him and be done with it as much as they talk about him.

Dude took all those sacks and that’s all they talked about was Sanders.

But I haven’t anything about Sampson.

Hate to say it but I am beginning to believe that’s true. But then again, dod Fulmers, Kiffins, Dooleys or Butchs system set up any QBs for the NFL? Besides Peyton, we haven’t had any good QBs in the NFL.
How many elite QBs has Heupel recruited at UT? One! And that QB left because of gross stupidity. Let's see what Faizon does in the system. Furthermore, the only 2 QB's from Saban's system that have been effective in the NFL are QB's that use their legs. His NFL pocket style passers have been NFL failures or back-ups.

I think this just shows what an outstanding coach Heupel is. He got more out of him than any other coach has been able to do. It is likely he would never been in the NFL if he had not played for Heupel.

Hooker was never really given a chance. Every time I saw him, the defensive line was blasting his offensive line. Every time he handed off the running back got killed. He was playing with 2nd and 3rd units the whole time. Can't help but think with his work ethic and character, he has a chance to resurface. Would be great to see him get to play with the same unit as Goff. I think Detroit was just a bad fit. Hoping he gets another opportunity.
His ceiling is QB2

Hooker and Milton were not skilled players being forced into a system. They were more or less average and thrived in the system. The QB track record in the NFL is an issue but less in a age of big money.

That second comment is silly

Hooker simply isn't good enough to be a QB1 in the NFL
