Honestly, can this guy lead UT to a SEC/National Championship?

And I say this with hopes he can, and I will support the hire until proven otherwise. But objectively speaking, do you look at CJH and think “yeah we will be competing for an SEC-Championship in the next 3-4 years!”
While mental illness is an important problem facing all of us, I don't know that we need to drag that into this discussion. I actually think he might be pretty good. We'll see. Pretty good is pretty good.

I think it's safe to assume that you're 10 years away from "really good". Realistically.

The NCAA is not going to hammer us that bad, pure over the top sensationalism. GBO!!!!

They don’t really have to at this point. You lost about half your roster due to graduation or the portal.

That’s before the NCAA does anything

I’m not sure I can say that.

If we were truly serious about competing, regardless of possible NCAA infractions, we would have broken the bank for a big time coach and not let them say no. Jury is out for sure.
Those days are over. Our ceiling is 9 wins - and it's an extremely high ceiling.

But....but....but the NCAA will be nice to us since we didn't hire Freeze, Kiffin, or Chadwell! LOL!!!!

Why? The entire roster turns over in 4 art the most. He deserves 3 at the most.

It’s going to be difficult to recruit championship caliber players in the first few classes.

He’s got people who graduated, people in the portal, and people on campus he didn’t bring to Tennessee and haven’t exactly excelled.

Nobody knows the future of UT football. Just hope for improvement each year.

Maybe not.

Can he consistently beat UK, Bandy, Arkansas, and Mizzou? While providing stability and consistency for the program?

If so then he is a successful hire right now.

We are not in the stratosphere of competing for titles right now. We CAN. That is the goal. However, we have to not be the program that has a losing record since 2008 first.

Defense is in a mess, but I think we've got some guys on offense who are about to explode.

Nick Saban himself couldn't with our program in it's current state. Give the guy a chance and see what happens. We won't know for 3 years.I feel like when the sanctions are announced we'll be at rock bottom. Year 1 will be about survival. More competitive year 2, then hopefully year 3 we're in a bowl game once the ban is lifted. This is gonna be a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace the ride. Go Vols!

He had the best offense in the SEC with mizzou for two years. If he gets a good DC, then yes he can. I see someone who fixes our offense and now we need a good DC. I am good with keeping Steele as well.

Assuming that projections of NCAA sanctions are not far overblown (if they are, Pruitt's lawyers are going to have a field day), in 3-4 years CJH will be hailed as a COTY candidate for having a winning season overall and 4-4 in SEC play would be considered phenomenal. If competing for championships is the standard, you will be right back in the coaching market in 3 years.

Reality is, UT had gone through 4 inept coaches. Reality is, UT needs to nut up and hire coach that brings UT into the championship conversation. That’s reality.

Who should they have hired in this alternate reality you speak of?

Lets walk before we run. Right now we gotta find someone who can consistently win some games vs people we should compete against. Lets get to 7,8,9 wins then decide.
