Home security question

Lol! First time I'm hearing crazy stuff about Kingston. My aunt and uncle live there but I don't hear any stories about it. I do know the local state troopers love setting up speed traps coming down the plateau. They sit in that area where it drops from 70 to 55 with very short notice. They'll fine you for anything and everything they can find on your car. Then you'll have to go to that sketchy Kingston courthouse.

We have ADT already equipped in our house but I called them and they want to charge $99 for new equipment installation and then $45 a month.
Yep. ADT won't allow you to use their equipment without monitoring it. If you chose to stop monitoring it they will come and yank out their equipment leaving holes.

I would buy my own stuff and install it since wifi is a thing this day and time. Alot of good deals searching online. I use to work for an alarm company in the early 90s. If you put stickers on your doors and windows or a sign in your yard stating you have a alarm that's 90% of a deterrent.

I purchased and installed a GE totally wireless system from the home security store. They are extremely easy to install. Installed door sensors and motion sensors with additional sirens and installed an external blue strobe light.
I don't use external monitoring. We mainly installed it to make sure we are awakened in time to acquire a 12 gauge shotgun and 44 magnum.

For what it's worth ill offer this:
Monitored alarms are wasted money in most cases. The average delay in the alarm company notifying a police dispatch is about 7 minutes. Youll have another 2-3 minute delay from the dispatch taking the call and notifying an officer. Then of course the officers response time depends on where they are in relation to youe home.

My advice would be an alarm such as ring or simply safe. They will notify you directly by phone and in most cases you can have a live feed camera that you can see. This does good in two way. 1. You can call police dispatch just as fast and your call will be a higher priority than a simple alarm call. Definitely the best option if you are away from home. If you are at home youll be doing the same thing only through the alarm.company. 2. The cameras have storage to id the offender for an investigator.
Buy extra sirens and place them in the attic vents. Burglars hate noise.

There are lots of things you can do to help lessen the likelihood of a burglary, if you are interested ill list a few. But I wouldnt suggest a monitored alarm. Most cities will charge you for false alarms after the first two or some predetermined amount.

Kingston ain't Mayberry.
They kill people their just like anywhere, just more bizzarely.

Walk right in front door a murder two women playing scrabble.

Houston Brothers Roane County, killed a deputy and ride along serving a warrant, claiming self defense.

A depuy was shot and killed at the courthouse.

A sherriff went to jail for dealing confiscated drugs.

A judge went to jail for extortion and money laundering.

It isn't like you can leave your car and front door unlocked anymore.
The Houston Brothers were acquitted. If anything, your list is an indictment on Roane County public officials and not the citizens.

Buy a couple of Ring doorbell or floodlight products and display the stickers prominently. The alert hits your phone as soon as there's exterior motion and you can evaluate what to do from there whether you're home or away.

Not sure aquitted means Innocent. It does show the mistrust of law enforcement by the citizens.
I was told in the 70s by a Roane Co resident that the crooks in McMinn Co (Battle of Athens) moved to Roane Co when they were run out of town.
I own land in Roane county, and dealing with some people in the courthouse was not pleasant. That was 10 years ago though.

That's interesting. Cocke County has some crooked guys up there, but as far as I know, they don't feed on the citizens or harrass them as much as I've heard about Roane County. In Cocke County, at least they offer services to the people like drugs, moonshine, cock fights and gambling.

Don't over pay for a poor service. Get your own camera system with apps that are cheap and easy to set up for the most part. Only need to add one significant item, make sure you've got a alarm that's loud enough to change a robbers mind.

Installed the ARLO camera system a couple weeks ago, works pretty well, maybe too well. Motion alerts are getting a bit annoying.

Well, the fact that I was not a citizen of their county probably contributed to the lack of respect.
Not sure that is uncommon in rural counties in TN. If you don't help them get elected ----

Ive got simplisafe, mainly for the wife when I'm away. It's fairly cheap and super easy to install. I have cameras that I can access from my phone, they record when the alarm goes off and you can actually have a 2 way conversation through them and using the app on your phone. I also like the fact that when I move, it goes with me. No more purchasing new equipment. It is $25/month.

It's hard to get it dialed in perfectly. Especially with passing cars. But it's been perfect at picking up people. I just turn off e-mail alerts on the high activity cameras. They still record everything though and can be checked online if a less sensitive camera detects motion or a sound.
