Hobnailed!

Munson sounded like a rabid fan calling their games. No "grace" in his choice of words (hobnailed boot). He was better than that horrible Eli Gold for bammer though. To each their own but in my opinion John Ward was the best of the best.
I was with you until you said that about Eli, which I disagree. In the times I've listened to him he at least comes from the same school of Ward where he will paint a picture of what is happening and keeps the listener up to date on all situations ie score, time, yd line, yd to first down, etc... At least you know what's going on. Hard to say that about Bob. I've tuned into him mid broadcast and had to wait forever just to hear the score.

This is my second biggest complaint of Bob after that it is just hard to listen to the broadcast. They announce the score like 5 times during the game. I have always thought they did this to keep listeners on longer but who knows.

Blob is a comedy of errors. Every single time I listen to him a little part of me dies inside. He is the Dooley of radio.

Eli Gold is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Bama fans think he's better than John Ward. I guess I associate his voice with NASCAR, which I haven't ever watched a race, so I don't understand it. Or maybe its the way he articulates his words.. "The Punnt-ter, gets the snap front the Cent -ter". I just can't embrace anything Bama. Maybe that's the real reason.

You can call it a classic if that's what you want. It was totally classless. If you want a classic call listen to the Cal announcer at the end of the '82 Stanford game. He was in the moment and he showed his excitement for his team, but he did it without disrespecting the other team.

Different styles. If Munson is our announcer, we love the calls. Because he called Georgia games and 2 of his classic calls were against Tennessee, we hate him. I'm sure he'd be ok with that. He started out calling Vandy games and had an outdoor show in the Nashville market back in the 60's. Basically he was a hired hand that grew into a big ole Georgia homer. Same as Cawood Ledford and despite his different style, everyone always knew who John Ward was pulling for. I have no issue with it. The call was in the moment and Munson even said he didn't even know exactly what a hob nailed boot was when he referenced it totally off the cuff. Classic.

Couple of things:

Just because a rivalry game series favors one side it does not mean it is still not a bitter rivalry. Look at Ohio State - Michigan. The series is woefully in Michigan's favor.

Ward was a true broadcaster in the classic definition in every sense of the word. While he was obviously for Tennessee he had a way of calling the game where he didn't sound like an irate drunk fan. I can't say the same for Munson.

The guys today are not really radio broadcasters. Kesling was a TV guy. They don't make em like John Ward anymore.

EDIT: Michigan is up on Ohio State by 12 games all time, the same difference in the bammer Tennessee series. Ohio State has dominated the series in the last several years.

Agreed. We just haven't done a very good job of holding up our end in the 'bigger' rivalry games. Georgia would be that game in my opinion if we hadn't avoided each other on the schedule until 1992. Alabama is our historical rival and Florida is the young generations rival but Kentucky and Vandy will both claim TN is their biggest rival. The ones on the short end of the stick claim the rivalry more than the ones with 11 game win streaks in our case. Ohio State and Michigan both claim each other as their most hated rival. There's no consensus with the Vols even amongst ourselves.
