Hindsight is 20/20

I believe a couple of coaches turned us down due to the roster being garbage. I can promise you Butch wasn’t the first option.

No way. Our roster was mangled after 2 years and 2 completely different staffs. Plus Kiffin had the hostesses lose and the NCAA in. Jones was probably the best we Christmas could do without spending $20M that we didn't have at the time.

We are in a much better position to hire a top shelf coach. I'll credit Butch for that.

I thought Franklin was very good, but he was at Vandy and we Vols can't have somebody from Vandy... Oh wait, Fulmer was an assistance at Vandy wasn't he?

It was tossed around on here. I and done others thought it could work. But the consensus of hate was too much to overcome imo.

"Tennessee has reportedly now been turned down by Larry Fedora and Mike Gundy, in addition to Charlie Strong and Jon Gruden. Four big swings, and four whiffs."

Did you catch the "reportedly"? No hard proof - just rumor or speculation. Did you notice that there are a bunch of stories quoting other stories? It's such a nebulous pile of dung that they don't even bother quoting "unnamed sources".

Would have been great to get Fedora or Strong....

Strong has already failed miserably at TEXAS of all places and Fedora is 2-8 this year

Don't you just love the lists of "sure thing", "can't miss", "home run" candidates?

I realize that hindsight is 20/20, but looking back, I really have a hard time believing that Butch was the best we could do in 2012.

First, he had never built or rebuilt a program. He followed Brian Kelly at two stops and had done nothing more than keep those programs from dropping in the toilet.

Second, his offensive system was not new, innovative, or overwhelmingly successful at any location. It is, sort of, Brian Kelly's system without the aggression or risk taking. In fact, UC fans were critical of his risk aversion quickly after he took over.

Third, the clichés that we make fun of now, belie his personality. He is uncomfortable in his own skin. He is unsure of his abilities and works hard to not say or do anything that reveals his lack of confidence or talent. That had to be readily apparent to anyone interviewing him.

What am I missing?

We wanted a podium guy. Didn't you hear Patterson

Bravo man, this is nail on the head. It couldn't be explained any better. Somehow he pulled the wool over Hart & co. in the interview. Just think, we could've had Patterson here all along.
