I read this article while ago and it confirmed what I thought before reading it

Why the State produces few SEC players - VolNation Blog

I've thought for some time that our problem exists in lack of instate talent. Not much has changed over the years in Tennessee High School football. The same schools that were good 30 years ago are good today. Back in the day my highschool played a lot of Tennessee schools and generally we won even though we were much much smaller. I remember whipping Austin East in a scrimmage. A Knoxville school v's a 1 A Kentucky school.

At whatever level a sport is played, it's dependent on the lower levels to feed it talent. Really it doesn't make a difference what sport it is, if Little League isn't feeding Jr Varsity and JV feeding the highschool and highschool feeding college, the system breaks down.

Basketball is different than football. You need 10 or so players for a basketball team. If Tennessee can produce 2 capable players out of 334 highschools per year we can keep a basketball team stocked with players. Football on the other hand needs 50 or so players, that's a dozen a year. According to this article, Tennessee produces 9.

I don't know if the answer is increasing the number of UT ran football camps, helping some of the better coached highschools to meet up with better talent, It may be that UT needs to work at the little league level to get kids involved in Football.

With UT's coaching budget 400,000 to 600,000 wouldn't be that big of a deal to come up with if it went toward hiring several hard working good coaches to promote little leagues, help with highschool players. You could probably hire a Defensive coach on the level of someone who would coach at Carson Newman for 75,000 or less. Make his unofficial job to visit area high schools and help the coaches out.

Obviously this isn't a quick fix to our problems, but IMO it's the longer term solution. Throwing money at coaches isn't going to do much if they don't have talent to work with. We paid how much to Lane and Co and what was the score of the Chicken Bowl? Why? We were obviously out classed talent wise.

Looking back in our history, Johnny Majors was one of the best coaches we've had for finding talent. His recruiting system kept Fulmer in business for a few years after Johnny was fired. Once the talent dropped, we have been what we've been since 2001 or so.

it is player development but one thing people in tennessee needs to realize is that tssaa has the head coaches and high school programs hands tied. I know this because I coach at chattanooga central and the head coach is only alloud to pay four assistants. so its hard to just go and get great coaches. other states have a better system to work under.

The answer is much simpler. In the days of Johnny Majors most of the talent was going to 10 schools. Now with the rise of so many other programs and scholarship reductions there is much more parody in college football. The reason TN, as a state, lags behind in D1 talent is simply because of the amount of African Americans in our state. East Tn is probably the whitest part of the entire world. The states that produce the most talent also have a much broader pool of athletes to pull from....its a simple as that.:hi:

I know Coach Barger at Central...and he does a great job BTW

What would prevent UT from having this Defensive Coach for instance put on clinics at highschools in the area. For instance he puts on a tackling clinic at Alcoa on Monday and Oak Ridge on Tuesday. 2 weeks later he returns to check on their progress.

While I agree somewhat with your basic premise Bobby, you apparently don't get out much. Have you thrown a chair across the gym floor lately? I do like the idea of more parody and more than 10 schools having a percentage of the good D1 talent. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Johnny sign 40 or 50 kids for a few years?

I think you are trying to make an excuse for bad football and blaming it on the lack of black to white people in this area when you make a blanket statement that is so racial you should be able to back it up with facts not with your opinion.... a far better understanding of how many blacks are in this state is measured by a percentage and this is the US Census record for that........ FLORIDA seems to be having a great year recruiting and they are a whiter state than we are.... and yes you are still wrong

# 1 District of Columbia: 57.177 per 100 people
# 2 Mississippi: 35.596 per 100 people
# 3 Louisiana: 31.613 per 100 people
# 4 South Carolina: 28.294 per 100 people
# 5 Georgia: 27.212 per 100 people
# 6 Maryland: 26.685 per 100 people
# 7 Alabama: 25.416 per 100 people
# 8 North Carolina: 20.441 per 100 people
# 9 Delaware: 18.628 per 100 people

So why does the D.C. not put out the most then......must be bad coaching in the DC area...lol....nice logic

Its a numbers game.....not a percentage game...

ARE YOU SERIOUS????:spank:

You seem to be laboring under the false idea that I agree with your assessment that the number of blacks in a community is the only reason they prosper in sports.....I do not, for if that were true the Virgin Islands would have best football players around....What you have failed to comprehend is that you made a wide sweeping statement that "East Tennessee is the whitest place in the world" I have only and do only say that you are wrong and yes percentage is how you determine where the whitest place is.... and East Tennessee in not even the whitest place in the United States., little on the world. O and I am very Serious :rtfm:

I think they play cricket there....and yes you are correct..we have more blacks by percentage than every state not competing for a national title.

By percentage..I think Jack Black's boat had more blacks too....but whatever

The number of African Americans in a state DOES directly correlate to the number of Division 1 players produced....out of the top 100....click on a few profiles ...tell me how many white players there are outside of QB and kickers...not many.

The problem within the state of Tennessee as far as producing quality D-1 athletes is far greater and deeper than just a simplistic view of race

Then using your own numbers Rutgers should be the number one team in the country every year and what has happened to Illinois and my goodness North Carolina just can't get it done even with Butch Davis

please merge your redundant comments ...
so what is your guess at it....TN coaching....

I'm sorry I didn't reconize you as a MOD ..... and what redundant statements have I made .... and when are intending to answer my questions as to why the states with the largest number of blacks in population are not the ones who are winning ....

Turning this into a racial argument is definitely not what I intended. Yes, the article talks about the number of African Americans, but the fact is there are good white players and good black players in the SEC, College Football and the NFL. To me color isn't the issue.

The issue is development of players. Mississippi produces 20 more players per year than does Tennessee. I don't know what they do that Tennessee doesn't, but I do know that these kids today that excel in a sport star very very young.

In my time we didn't play any sort of football till we were in 5th or 6th grade. Today they are starting soccer at 5 and 6 years old.
