Freak,

Is there anyway to raise the posting standards in the recruiting forum or monitor the threads more closely to better mitigate the negativity about potential recruits?

I don't blame our fanbase, rather, I think society in general is currently enveloped in drama and negativity. Of course, our current football climate does not help the matter.

These kids sometimes make the mistake of posting stupid pictures on facebook and writing dumb things on tweeter. As soon as these teenagers conduct themselves in such a manner we immediately go to the internet to bash them. Some fans may not think a recruit is ideal for us because he has 3* by his name instead of 5*, even though the stars mean about as much as a preseason top-25 poll. The unhappy fans tend to say we do not "need" that recruit or we should not "waste" a scholarship on them. It is not sensible to think these teenagers do not read these threads because they are young, impressionable and want to know what fanbases think about their talents.

I realize we all have First Amendment rights, however, this is a private website and not a government run entity. Therefore, none of us really have First Amendment rights when it comes to "volnation.com." Freak may censor us as he pleases.

Is it possible to take a more active approach in mitigating the negativity aimed at potential recruits?

I decided to post this in the forum to see if others might agree or have alternative ideas.

Although I bashed Bell pretty good today, I think this is a good idea.

I think most people, like myself, just get caught in the moment a lot of times. Bell crushed us today. Plain and simple.

Hence "potential recruits." No more potential once they head to Urbana or Bama.... or Ole Miss apparently.

Not sure if serious but no, it's big baby John Jenkins enjoying the discovery of his opposable thumb.

It is a message board. Any recruit that does not come to UT because posters ragged his tail is not worthy to be a Vol by being so dumb as to read posts on a message board. Kind of like what I am doing right now.

Not much discussion if all anyone can say is how amazing a kid they've never seen play is.

There's always the idea of limiting forums to stuff that actually updates the fan base on the recruits whereabouts, recent interviews, big highschool games, awards, comments regarding UT...

I dunno, i feel like this might be crazy talk. :fool:

Would not help tons since then people would just spam till they hit the amount. I would much rather have a thumbs up and down option on the site. If a post reaches a certain amount of negative clicks then it goes away and maybe the poster is effected by it also?

I'm all for that on the threads that are designed to be that way. It's very convenient to be able to look at a single thread and very quickly get all the important info. But, that's certainly not what I want the entire forum to be like. If I wanted that I'd go to a news site. It's called a forum for a reason.

You're telling me that if you were a 17 year old highschool recruit, having several offers, who came across a thread with your name on it (obviously after g00gling yourself) and saw that fans of a school were saying they did not want you or you are some kind of idiot and the school has lost to UK and Vandy in the past two years that you would brush that off.

See... here's another good idea. Let the general population absolve volnation of the toxicity.

While it would be great if you can regulate it, it's probably not workable. Of course, the best thing we have going for us is that all other boards are likely the same. These kids are, I hope, counseled early on that if you are a good player and in demand you are going to disappoint someone with your college choice and you have to be ready for the backlash. I further hope that these players have learned the precious lesson to "consider the source."

I would be in favor of doing this across all forums, with the possible exception of the Endzone... 'cause that's how they roll.

Yep and I'm not mentioning him anymore. As for the recruits we signed today welcome to the HILL! Volnation is proud to have so make us proud! I can see 8 wins next year and building with any kind of defense! The team has a lot of talented players that are ready to change the attitude.

The best thing we can do is support 100%, fill Neyland and blow the roof off every Saturday win or lose. This is the only way we will get back to the top!

Love the coaching staff and attitude!

I think stricter regulation on here is a good idea. There are just too many people who are way too hard on kids/families/coaches. I think in a lot of ways it makes our fan base and team look undesirable and trashy.

Nothing personal Volmaniac, but come on man, this is a sports message board...Volnation....6,000 rabid, passionate fans a day. You have to have thick skin and be able to take the positives with the negatives lol Remember, we all want the same thing here...for our beloved once-proud program to be elite again :)

Could've fooled me.

I'm not bothered by the posts. I'm just pointing out the simple fact we are in the midst of a social networking sociocultural era and it is unrealistic to expect teenagers to not get on the internet and look themselves up. You can't expect those teenagers to so easily shrug off comments and have a thick skin.

I think the dislike button would be ideal. Don't post the number of dislikes but just remove the post after a certain number of dislikes. Seems simple enough.

This. I'm not sure if a downvote system is possible though. I think the easiest thing would just be a guideline of no personal attacks which could be enforced by a moderator.

I like this idea quite a bit. I've seen to many people bashing kids on here over the last month and half I've been a member here.
