Hey guys we are having a debate

yes there are minimum requirements that football players have to take/pass during the fall semester. I'm not positive on the exact numbers....but I want to say that it's taking a minimum 12 hours of classes and pass 6. But it may even be taking 15 hours passing 9. Something like that.

That's why you'll see guys ruled ineligible for bowl games. If they don't pass the minimum hours during fall semester when grades come out in Dec., they are ruled ineligible for games until they catch up academically. (Of course last year we didn't have to worry about that....)

Pretty easy, they have to take a full time load and maintain the minimum GPA to stay in school.

I want to say in the fall, full time for football players is 9 hours, not the 12. However, all those rules about going, etc are in place. They do have tutors, etc as well.

In my program, I had a class with Wes Brown (spring semester 2009, when he had surgery), Renaldo Woolridge, Scotty Hopson and Negedu in a different class. Brown and Negedu were two of the best guys I've known. They both took care of their business in the classroom, to the extent that Negedu refused to be in a group project with Hopson to avoid lazy students.

Also had a summer school class with Chad Cunningham. He was like Brown and Negedu.

+1 Winning an argument with you wife is a terrible idea. Just shut your mouth and nod your head in agreement and life will be easier. Also, whenever she complains just shut up and listen, never ever ever ever try to solve her problem. That is suicide. She only wants you to listen and show that you care. That's it.

Not married yet but read this somewhere. Sounds like good advice.

I was in US History 2 back in 1997 with Tee Martin. He was there a few times at best.

They go to class when not out of town for a Road Game. We had study hall together in Thornton, I had classes with half our starting secondary and D-Line. Class checkers were (possibly still are) both strength and conditioning staff, grad assistants, and hired students. Remember, it isn't just games that take up time. It is practice, meetings, film study, strength and conditioning, rehab/training room, public appearances, etc...The ones that graduate are the most dedicated of all students on campus, period.

We were watched very closely. Whether any rules were bent is neither here nor there (many non-athletes beg department heads for better grades and succeed), but the notion that somehow being an athlete is a free pass in college is the epitome of ignorance.

Oh, and your wife is always right!

Let's not forget how many classes at UT have a non-mandatory attendance policy. Also, I took finals out of schedule because we were on the road. Just because an athlete isn't present doesn't mean he/she didn't take the exam. Very common occurrence.

I had an accounting class with Marvin Mitchell back in 2006-2007 and he was there every single day. Same with Montario Hardesty in a Sports Management class.

I don't believe that there is a semester by semester minimum load. It is based on the academic year. Many front load it with spring/summer classes to lighten the load in the fall. Some 5th year seniors have already graduated and might be taking 1 or 2 graduate classes. The key is to maintain progress toward a degree.

I always thought athletes treated their season as their summer semester. IE Football players take fewer classes in the fall but load up during the summer semester.

There is a team who is assigned to walk into a class and make a count of heads to make sure they are in attendance. They also have an academic advisor and tutors assigned to players who need help. They have a back log of class notes and tests from professors who have been there for a long time. They have it made if your goal is to graduate. Summer school is helpful so the kids can get more class credits, build their GPA and work out.
