I say that I always heard that football players especially have lax school schedules during the year and my wife is saying they go to class just like everyone else, I find that hard to believe though considering all the preparation for games and away games also. If anyone can clarify this so I can actually be right for once, haha. All the married guys know what I'm talking about .

football players go to class...they are watched closer than anyone by their advisors and coaches. whether or not they have to do much more than go to class depends solely on their major

I think they take a lot of online classes,
I am currently in an online class at UofL and there are about 4-5 football and basketball players in it.

This. Also I believe many of them take summer classes. It's amazing how many graduate early. Robert griffin 3 had a year of eligibility left and had completed a masters program.

May want to check sec and ncaa rules. I'm no expert, but i would GUESS there are rules about it, especially with regard to scholarship players. JMH

They go to class.

How much can depend on a lot of factors. Online classes, loading up on summer school hours then taking fewer in the fall, their major only offering certain classes at certain times, etc etc.

I'm fairly sure there's a minimum they have to pass.

yes there are minimum requirements that football players have to take/pass during the fall semester. I'm not positive on the exact numbers....but I want to say that it's taking a minimum 12 hours of classes and pass 6. But it may even be taking 15 hours passing 9. Something like that.

That's why you'll see guys ruled ineligible for bowl games. If they don't pass the minimum hours during fall semester when grades come out in Dec., they are ruled ineligible for games until they catch up academically. (Of course last year we didn't have to worry about that....)

+1 Winning an argument with you wife is a terrible idea. Just shut your mouth and nod your head in agreement and life will be easier. Also, whenever she complains just shut up and listen, never ever ever ever try to solve her problem. That is suicide. She only wants you to listen and show that you care. That's it.

They go to class just like every student...Football is an extra curricular activity....If they don't go to class and get decent grades they become academically ineligible to play football.

There are a lot of factors at play here and it can depend on the individual, the major, the school -- but your wife is closer to the mark than you are on this one imo. Football is demanding and some might take a lighter load in season but they then in turn have to catch up off season and in summer. There are exceptions but - a degree in let's say Accounting from UT as earned by a football player is no different than one earned by a non player and both would have to put in an equal amount of work.

I would guess on average it might take the football players and other athletes a slightly longer amount of time to graduate but even there I would be speculating.

I think it's pretty common to take the minimum a full time student can take (12 hours) in the fall semester, and then load up more in spring and summer. I would imagine they also save their easiest classes for the fall as well. 12 hours is still most likely 4 classes though, so they definitely stay busy.

I'm sure they have tutors that "help" them with homework, and tests are graded on a better scale, A friend of mind said "All SEC schools are just athletic organizations with academic programs"

I have some ocean front property in Arizona I'd like to sell a lot of you guys.

I had two finance classes my senior year with a holder and a defensive starter. Holder was there most of the time, like the rest of us. The defensive starter was in each class MAYBE five times over the course of the semester and wasn't present at either final exam. He was (not kidding) Academic All-SEC that season.

To the original question, I've heard that there's an unwritten rule for professor's that you don't fail a football player.

That said, I'm back finishing up undergrad after a fair amount of time off. Last semester I had a class with Greg King and he was there most of the time. When he wasn't, he let the prof know.

This semester I've got an intro level survey course with exactly six football players. I've only seen one attend every class, another has only been once that I know of, but there's always a chick who comes around with a clipboard to check their attendance.

The athletic department used to hire students (non athletes) to peak into the class rooms to make sure that the athletes were going to class, I don't know if they still do this or not. They also had mandatory tutoring sessions to make sure they were keeping up on their studies.

Considering Dooley is emphasizing the Vol for Life program, I would assume he is doing something similar.
