I am hopeful that Heupel's successful college career will be a recruiting advantage for him. Having done some professional recruiting (not football) in the past, I always found identifying common experiences was very helpful in establishing a relationship and that was aided considerably when you have done the job you are recruiting for and done it well. I think that is something that has probably helped some guys like Kirby Smart who were good players themselves in the past, recruit. Heupel, being a national championship winning quarterback has that sort of credibility in spades.

We shall see. We did just see what happens when your playing career is terrible and you get owned by Tennessee the entire time then try to be a head coach of the team that kicked your ass during the years you still had hair on your head.

That O tree started with Hal Mumme. Stoops struggled defending Kentucky while at Florida; hence, Leach brought to OU in 1999 and Leach found Josh at Snow JC.

Most of today’s players don’t know who he was. I vaguely remember his name. Now if he had won the Heisman it would be a different story.

Yeah but in building relationships with players he can tell them "hey, I was starting quarterback at Oklahoma on a national championship team" they can Google it and see real quick that he ain't lying. That would lend him some relatability and credibility with players that people like band nerd Butch or scout team Pruitt would never possess.
