Heupel really did get scapegoated at Oklahoma

Kinda rough to make your own brother a Scapegoat. Then say, "see the issue is solved and we're gonna do better next year."

There is definitely context here...when Stoops came to OU from Florida he said the most difficult O he had to defend in the SEC was Kentucky. He hired Mumme disciple, Mike Leach to run our O and because we didn't have a spread QB on the roster he found Josh at Snow J.C. The next year we won the NC but Leach had left for Tech. Through 2004 we had both a good O and a great D but starting in 2005, as the Big 12 evolved into a wide open offensive QB dominated league our D suffered. Kevin Wilson became our OC and Josh was QB coach. After Wilson left to become HC at Indiana Josh was elevated to OC and he had Landry Jones, Trevor Knight and Blake Bell. In my mind the Clemson game at the end of 2014 was not the single determinant. It was the evolvement of the O's in the conference led by Leach and then by Art Briles at Baylor. In 2013/14 Baylor pounded our ass and Stoops could see that the D's in the league could not keep up so to win you had to out score the opponent. He knew Riley from Riley's days at TT so he went after him at EC. Riley got lucky when a little known transfer from TT walked on in the spring of 2015. Had OU's D been good enough to offset the drop in O production Josh and Norvell probably would not have been let go but there was no way Bob was going to fire his brother who was the D coordinator. Riley eventually fired Mike Stoops although most OU fans will tell you he waited too long. He should have been fired after the Georgia Rose Bowl playoff but Lincoln waited until we lost to Texas in 2018. Of course, we did avenge that game in the CCG.

Heupel was fired from Oklahoma in 2014 after a really bad loss to Clemson (40-6). The Sooners went 8-5 that year, so Stoops needed to make a change.

So he fired... Heupel?? Heupel’s offense that year averaged 36 points per game. In their 5 losses, their defense gave up 37, 31, 48, 38, and 40. But Heupel is the one that got the axe.

That’s unreal..... I mean that’s like firing your D-Line coach when your offense can’t score and keeps turning the ball over, ya know?[/1612574394972.gif1612574394972.gif

Heupel himself points out that he's grateful that it happened, because it changed the course of his career, forced him to continue to improve, and led to him going down the head coaching route.

Well, what else is he going to say...”you know, I deserved to fired.”
