Heupel QB Stats since he was an oc

The more I think through Joey A. the more I really like our chances this season to do something special. He’s experienced, has a great arm, and did great with far less talent and coaching.

I’m not saying he’s a preseason Heisman, but I am saying when it’s all said and done, I believe ppl will say “Tennessee got the better of the UCLA Tennessee QB swap.”
I will agree with this, just wish he'd been here in the Spring. The caveat IMO will be getting through the Syracuse game with a good vibe. Then we have ETSU to exhale and get ready for the gauntlet.

Am I missing something or are the only ones on that list playing in the NFL today VFLs? And one of those, Hooker, was not a Heupel recruit and was benched by him.
Umm he's turned a bunch of retreads into NFL draft picks. Hooker, Joe Milton, Knight ......

Technically you forgot to include Gaston Moore's 2 TDs which would put Tennessee at 21 TDs which is equal with 2013 and better than 2014 & 2015. Comparing Nico to other teams that had multiple QB stats isn't quite fair.

Also, I wonder how many of Heupel's QBs were Redshirt Freshmen as was Nico.

Please clarify. So Heup sucks? Cornbread is the better coach?
Not saying Heupel sucks at all, he doesn't. Just saying he's no big time QB whisperer either. For that matter neither is Kirby Smart for example.

Don't think his offense has been "revamped". It might have been adjusted and evolved depending on the talent he had to work with but no wholesale revamping.

The issue is that he seems to be married to a particular system and hasn’t really adjusted his scheme any to fit his personnel. Which is something great playcallers do. Look at some of the tweaks Kiffin, Lebby, and Briles have made to the system. Golesh even has made some tweaks. We have to have a more balanced run and passing game this year

Something else to think about-the year Heupel was at Utah State would have have been when they were recruiting Jordan Love of the Packers.

Love enrolled at Utah State in summer of 2016 so would have signed in fall of 2015-when Heupel was OC.
Yes. Heupel recruited Jordan Love himself if I recall. He knows QBs. Only the last few years have his handpicked guys not completely worked out. Imagine if he had brought Gabriel in for the last two years what our offense would have been like.

^ Also, the last two years weren’t completely on the QBs as the receivers were mediocre.

We opened vs them somewhere along the line-2014 I think?

Anyway, the season before we played them Keaton was kind of the "mid season" Heisman before he got hurt.

I remember being kind of worried about that game during the summer-Botch was the coach then and that whole malaise scene

Anyway, he's apparently moving up in the coaching ranks now. Believe I heard recently he was on the staff in NE now.
I was worried about that game as well. If I remember right, we crushed them by 4-5 TDs.

There was a big drop off in WR play. I watch other teams WR and their guys are climbing the ladder, laying out for the ball or one handing it.
Ours were like oh well it didn't hit me perfectly in the hands...guess we'll line up and try it again

If you don't see any difference between the offense in 2024 and the offense in 2022 theres no point in discussing anything.

You mean something like Brazzell's TD winning catch against Alabama?

Go back and watch some highlights

Actually, he has changed to fit his personnel. Schematics and calling plays are entirely different functions.

Pretty much lol. Even though Dont’e had a good year there were times where I wished he’d actually jump up for balls instead of waiting for it to drop down in his hands. Luckily he was 6’5 and DBs had to really jump to outreach him.

Playcalling just got more conservative and we had a less balanced passing attack. Schematically nothing has changed though and if anything the offense has significantly regressed each of the last 2 seasons

Sure. Because we had QB's that Heupel didn't trust to do certain things. I criticize Heupel for being a little too predictable with the play calling sometimes, but he has made great adjustments to maximize what he has to work with.

You mean the two QBs he hand chose to play for him? It’s not just the predictable playcalling that’s the issue. It was predictable in 22, but we had the players to execute it at a high level and had more presnap motions that gave receivers free releases and makes it easier for QBs to identify coverages. The biggest problem is the unwillingness to change his offensive approach to the game. We had 2 phenomenal RBs in 2023 and a freak athlete at QB we should’ve been running sometime similar to what Florida ran with Tebow and passing game with more condensed receiver sets so we could run receivers open early rather than just throw quick screens and deep balls with nothing in between. A scheme change to something with more traditional passing concepts makes it easier for young guys to be plugged in and make an impact in the passing game
