In the same breath, if not for Dobbs Butch is fired in year 3.

QB success is very much related to head coaching job security

Butch was obviously a bad hire, but he’s also the only coach to get us to 9 wins two years in a row in quite some time and he didn’t leave us with any major program scandals save bad recruiting. Butch is universally defined as a bad coach, but there’s a good bit of the fanbase that defends Pruitt. I’ll never understand it.
I have not heard ANYONE defend Pruitt on this board and had hopes for him like, like we all did. I was extremely frustrated with Jones and the 2017 season and was certainly ready for him to leave. However, I don’t get all the hate ? Ok, he was a bad coach, but I don’t think he intentionally LOST all those games and burned down the building when he left. Bonehead decisions, I get it. But did I miss a scandal or that he was a total jerk of a human being? Regardless, I’m loving our new coach and looking for a greater future.

Rumors seeped out after he left per his personality, how he treated players, lies, promises, etc... Seems he was a selfish snake oil salesman whose personality problems created a toxic, losing culture.

Yeah, it's taught me a valuable lesson and I've grown from it. That's why I get triggered by the people here that refuse to grow and for some unfathomable reason choose to torture themselves and others. That too has forced me to grow and now I'm at peace with it and have sworn to myself and General Neyland's spirit to do my best to troll those that just can't let go.

Congrats on finally finding your true purpose in life. Liberating, isn't it?

Butch was clearly in over his head at UT. His 1st couple of teams seemed to play very hard which gave the fans hope as the talent arrived. Once the talent arrived the coaching seemed to falter.
I knew Butch wasnt the guy when he fired Dave Lawson at some player's request. Lawson was the best S&C coach we had in years and the results on the field were evidence of that. The very year after he was fired, we looked soft! The difference was very noticeable. That Appy State team we played in the opener was much tougher/more physical than we were. We won the game but it felt like a loss because physically we got whipped that day.

They don’t necessarily defend him, but I have read several say, had it not been for the scandal, they think he would have done good things in 2021. And I feel the tone of people discussing Pruitt is way more positive than the name calling and almost hatred I’ve seen others provide when talking about Butch.
I’m with you, I truly believe Butch is a decent man who wanted to succeed here, he was just in way over his head. Pruitt I never felt like he really wanted to be here. Instead, I always got the feeling he was just using us as a resume builder in hopes of bolting for his vision of bigger and better whenever it came available.

You serious? Pruitt is dog-talked in here.

Lol, I don't know but he's the only Tennessee HC coach in 17 years that can say he beat the unbeatable gaters.

And the only one that couldn't beat Muschamp at two programs.

Football Coaches - Arkansas State University

I just took a peek at his staff. His son Alex is doing Offensive QC, and Zac Jancek is on the defensive side of it. He has Chance Hall as a grad assistant. As to the rest, there is none of them I have heard of, and compared to the staff he brought here from Cincinnati? I have to conclude this bunch is a far cry from what he brought to Tennessee. I think some were retained from Blake Anderson's staff. And he has brought some folks from different places, but none are familiar at all.

Edit: One thing is for sure upon closer inspection; Saban did not cure him of his strange fascination with the I word.
Looking at that I conclude that it’s not “THE BEST staff in the country “ like he had when he was @ UT . I also can’t believe I’m just now realizing that the conspiracy theory guy is Butch‘s boy . Coaching and saving the world from pizza loving pedos must be time consuming . He also appears to be an individual lacking neck tie tightening discipline .

Funny how everyone has an excuse for everything. Josh and JJ won Florida but Butch lost SC and Vandy.
Dobbs sure as hell didn’t lose Vandy. He broke tee’s consecutive completion in what would’ve been remembered as the single greatest performance by a Vol QB if the team hadn’t crapped the bed.

Honestly without Dobbs, Butch had Pruitt’s results with a much more talented roster. Butch had a great recruiting class bc of the legacy and instate talent that year. A good number of coaches win the East minimum with the talent he had. But hey he beat Florida, no one can take that from him.
