Heupel and Tennessee QB narrative

Ignorant take. You have 32 teams and QB’s play 10+ years. You have to be one of the 32 best on the planet within the past 8-10 years to even have a shot as a starter. Is Ty Simpson going to unseat Burrow or Trevor Lawrence? Is Stockton going to unseat Mahomes or Dak? Really moronic take. Just the fact that Heup took Gabriel, Lock, Hooker, Milton and have them on current rosters says a ton (Hooker was cut so who knows but was on a roster for 2+ years). Those guys were cast offs and all made it to the NFL. Anyone else see a QBU out there? These starters are aliens that come from many styles and backgrounds…Kyler Murray and Joe Flacco. Heup is a great great coach. Ask Manning what he thinks of Heup as a QB developer.

True, but there have been multiple less-prominent football programs who have put multiple consistent starters in the NFL since that time.
Soemtimes those QB's are just better. Don't have to be a P4 to be NFL caliber. It's hard to get noticed. One of the great NFL/ATL Flacons linebackers only got a Div II offer out of high school. Didn't get drafted. Didn't get a UFA agreement. Wasn't on anyones radar. Has held his HS bench press record at 428 lbs since 1983. Everyone said too small and slow. Only 5'10 and 180 out of high school but benched over 3 times his weight. Only reason he made the Falcons roster is his HC put him in his car, drove him to the head offices, and begged them to look at him. They signed him after finally agreeing to give him workouts during spring practices. Only one of two NFL players to lead season tackles 4 times. Lead NFL in tackles from 90-99 with 1293. Two sons went to NFL. One, Grady Jarrett still plays and was picked up by Chicago for 2025 on a 3 year deal after ATL released him. We're talking the great Jesse "The Hammer" Tuggle. From only 2 DII offers, to no draft status, to chance meeting to tryout during sping practice, to 5 time Pro-Bowler with over 1800 career tackles. Cool thing, both he and his son Grady were able to play in superbowls, both as a Falcon. Jarrett sacked Brady 3 times in that epic meltdown of a game.

I love Hooker. Really do. But does anyone honestly believe he even gets an NFL try out as a UFA if he hadn't put up big numbers in Heupel's O? He wasn't headed toward the NFL at VT. He was headed back to Greensboro.

Heupel runs a system. That system fits some guys. It doesn't fit other guys. A guy with talent who performs at UT in Heupel's O is NOT going to be hurt on draft day. There are a LOT of guys with success in the NFL today who weren't prepared by their college program to run an NFL O.
I think you just described 136 different D1 offenses alone, plus 32 NFL systems. It's all about the right fit. And everyone has their way of trying to decide that fit. And sometimes they still get it wrong. There have been many washouts in the league at multiple positions that were in a bad fit, couldn't get out, and when they did was too late. Other's got out and into another system and had a HOF career. Favre comes to mind.

How many NFL starting qb's has Bama, Georgia, Florida, LSU etc., produced? College ball in general is different. Add up all the teams qb's and the percentage of starting nfl qb's is miniscule. These keyboard jockeys are just mad cause they are as inept at playing a game as the majority of us are.
This is spot on!!!!!

I would bet that virtually every QB has some adjustments in the routes from their college team to their pro team. And QBs with NFL talent can make throws in any route tree and against the better competition.

When Bama gets the top QB every year or every other year, yeah they will end up getting a couple of starters in the NFL. Faizon will have the most potential since Shuler and Manning.

I refuse to click on an AtoZ link, but here is the list of SEC schools with NFL starters and their HCs in college:

Bama (Saban): Tua, Young, Hurts
OK (Riley): Murray, Mayfield
LSU (Orgeron, Kelly): Burrow, Daniels
MSU (Mullen): Prescott
Georgia (Richt): Stafford
SC (Beamer): Rattler…LOL
Auburn (once removed): Nix
Ole Miss (Kiffin) may have a starter when Dart gets healthy

Please let me know who I’ve missed.
Edit: Mullen - thanks @Jravol78

Maybe we should go after Beamer for HC?

List of current NFL starting quarterbacks - Wikipedia

Oklahoma has three starting QB's in the NFL LSU has two, Bama and Georgia has one.
At one point a year or so ago, the last four starting QBs at Alabama were starting in the NFL…Bryce Young, Mac Jones, Jalen Hurts, and Tua Tagovailoa. Jones faded and of course Hurts is listed as Oklahoma’s but still it was an amazing stat for a time

the Vols haven't had a true NFL QB since freaking Peyton Manning nearly 30 years ago lol. how is that heupel's fault?

also outside of a couple Bama QBs and Joe Burrow, the SEC hasn't really had a good record of QBs sticking around the starting QB job in the NFL

And Tua may not last long the way he gets hurt.

and my last comment. I could give a rats behind how these kids do in the NFL, that's their business. I care if Heupel gets the most out of them while they are at UT. that's what we pay him for.

Young has been a disappointment, Jones was terrible, hurts as you pointed out had to leave bama and finish at okla, and tuas head is a bean bag. All that being said, none of them played for the current staff.

This^ Heupel helped Hendon by scheming to his Strengths and hiding his deficiencies. Of the 14 QBs that got drafted in that class, 2 are starters, 1 is a head case. This guy isnt bad mouthing the other 10 programs for not preparing their QBs. He just wants clicks and ruffeling volnations feathers on game week of game #1 is easy money.

Doesn’t it seem like Joel Klatt has some jarring take every season? That’s what these guys do. They drop some hot takes and see if one catches fire to draw attention to themselves.

An undrafted, mini-camp-only QB’s opinion of this offense and our HC doesn’t matter. If it’s such a terrible offense, why are teams struggling to stop it? Why are players from it getting drafted and receiving accolades?

I’ll take Heupel’s judgement to run this offense over Klatt’s outside opinion of it. One’s a National Champion, former All-American, QB of the Year, SEC Coach of the Year, and the other’s Joel Klatt… enough said.
Joel Klatt is not referred to or quoted in the article.

Truth be told, Heupel’s offense translating to the NFL is still a big question mark. He really hasn’t had a good NFL player yet. Until that changes, it will remain a question.

That being said, the far more concerning thing is just how bad Milton and Nico looked at UT. There are successful college offenses and schemes that don’t translate to the NFL, that’s fine. But the last couple years of offensive output won’t cut it.

My thought as well. How many for instance has Kirby put starting QBs into the NFL? Stafford was not one of his and before him it was Fran Tarkenton.

He's had 2 guys other programs didnt want and a redshirt freshman who didnt play well and couldn't be kept upright as it was.

Panthers fan here. Young has a trash team. Once he came back from being benched, he played better. I think we'll know a lot more this year.
