Wow the crowd was pathetic last night. The absolute worst I've seen for a SEC game since my freshman year in 1988. My throat is raw from yelling and people were turning around and looking at me like I was interrupting their tea party. The defense needed us last night with that insane offense they were facing, and Vol fans.......we weren't there for our boys.
Does anyone remember when 1000s of cups used to fly off the upper decks in Neyland? Dozens of rolls of toilet paper? Anyone remember beach balls being batted around the stadium? Does anyone remember when the place use to literally shake and sway from side to side? Does anyone remember someone standing right next to you and you not being able to hear them? Anyone remember smelling whiskey in the air........and bottles being busted on opponents helmets? Anyone remember state troopers lining the sidelines in absolute fear of our crowd?
What is this new place they've put where Neyland used to be? A place where fancy LED screen and skyboxes full of luxury have replaced Southern lore and a healthy sense of fear. Why do I feel like I'm sitting on a giant billboard who's making me get up and get my drinks and hot dogs now? Why is the guy sitting next to me not the old man who used to tell me stories of past UT greats, but some annoying lawyer from Nashville who's more concerned his princess doesn't hear me say a swear word when something goes wrong and gets annoyed when people try to cheer? Why do I feel like soon he'll have my tickets too......as soon as they price me out?
I think what we're seeing is the sissyfication of a state treasure. It makes me sick:sick:
On the trolley ride over, an Auburn fan excitedly told me that he had been to a UT/Auburn game in the rain in the 90's and it was the loudest stadium he had ever been in. He said they had been to all the SEC stadiums. He had brought his family to see how crazy Neyland got.....especially at night. I was swelled with pride on the way over to watch the game last night after talking with him. I cordially let him know I'd been to Auburn 3 times and they had a great stadium as well. I bet he was shocked when he arrived to our 102,000 seat mausoleum.
