Here's my theory on the booster war and coaching search we saw last week...

Repeat in 2017. The mosquito d**k makes his power known again. Now we have some idiots on here that think Fulmer was part of a coup to torpedo hiring the mediocre Leach. Laughable and sad. All that being said, I dont think Gruden is in play at all. I dont think he intentionally trolled us or anything. I believe, like you, that Gruden wanted absolute control and Haslam had none of it again. As long as Haslam is here, there will be no Gruden.

I asked in another thread and I'll ask here....what specific control would he want that Haslam was unwilling to give up?

There is about as much chance of Gruden coaching for the Vols as there is off Josh Dobbs becoming an all-pro NFL QB..... the next Warren Moon my a$$.

It's more likely that I'll win the lottery, be elected president, and discover the remains of Manti Teo's girlfriend in the same day than it is that Gruden will ever coach here.

Yet as recently as this weekend the conspiracy theorists put together and the herd swallowed yet another milestone that has come and will be missed, the vaunted MNF announcement. We're already seeing some of them backing off of that one a little after professing being 100%. Reading the Grudenite threads reminds me of when one of my favorite elementary teachers reminded all of us we would see throughout our lives why US newspapers were written to be read at the 4th grade reading level. Soon? No, LOON.

Disclaimer: I'm no insider. This is just what I believe has happened.

First, I believe Jon Gruden was genuinely interested in the Tennessee job. I don't think he would just troll Vols fans with things like "never say never" or yelling "rocky top" on radio if he had zero interest. I also think if he came to Tennessee, he wanted full control of the program like Saban has at Alabama. I think the Haslam's balked on this request which is why the initial talks between him and Tennessee fell through. The Haslams care more about keeping their power than they do about what's best for Tennessee. This is what led to the booster war we saw last week.

I think the Haslam's tried to hire Schiano behind the backs of the other boosters who thought Gruden was still in play. After the Schiano fiasco occured, the other boosters finally had the ammo to take the Haslam's out. That is what happened Friday. Fulmer was the choice of the anti-Haslam contingent of boosters while Sigmon was the Haslams choice. Beverely Davenport picked Fulmer over Sigmon cause she feared the other boosters pulling their money out of the program more than the Haslams.

Now I believe Fulmer and the non-Haslam boosters are trying to make another run at Gruden. I think they're gonna finally offer him the full control he wanted that Jimmy Haslam wasn't going to allow and make him say no. Don't know if he'll accept but I hope he does because he's the only person IMO that can get Tennessee back to prominence.

I still believe Gruden to Tennessee is possible.

Oh. You again.

Please put that Gruden fairytale to bed, it was all nothing but wishful thinking and an opportunity for Jon to get some free publicity, which he loves.

The program really needs proven college level coaches that have actually coached and won games and championships. Gruden is a TV rock star and if he really does come back to coaching it will be with the NFL, not with a bunch of 18 year old kids.

I just wish the entire Gruden threads would be deleted by the moderators.

Amen x 1000 to the 10th power... He is not coming.

Please stop trolling with the Gruden myth. It is not happening.

I asked in another thread and I'll ask here....what specific control would he want that Haslam was unwilling to give up?

You are never going to get an answer to that question because those who trot out this line of reasoning don't have an answer to give. I mean, clearly Haslam's influence is detrimental to the UT football program. It isn't healthy for one man to have as much say-so as he has when it comes to hiring and firing. With that said, when people talk about Haslam giving up control, or mention how Nick Saban has complete control of the Alabama program, they don't know what kind of control they're talking about.

For starters, "control" as it relates to a coach is day-to-day operations of the program...and rest assured that Haslam has zero control over day-to-day operations of the UT football program. He doesn't pick what offensive sets are implemented, or what drills are run in practice, or which recruits the coaches are allowed to target, or anything like that. Secondly, when people say things like "Gruden wanted complete control of the program," that's nonsense. Let's say, hypothetically, that Gruden asked for more control than a coach typically has. That only means one thing: Telling the AD to butt out from a compliance standpoint and/or a budget standpoint. No AD is going to cede control over those things to a coach. Because do you know what happens if a major NCAA violation is committed? The NCAA will absolutely hammer the school for giving that control to a coach.

So, short answer: You'll be waiting awhile for the answer you seek.

The Haslam theory is not unique you know....Paul Bryant at Bama and the Yaller Wood guy at Auburn also have a great deal of control.

Ummmm...please no. I like to visit the Gruden threads at times. But if you end the threads, then the Grudenites will be scattered all across every board all of the time. I like my bitter disappointment in small doses, so I would like to keep them contained. We can visit and leave when we need to.

I really disagree about Gruden. I think he would troll Vol fans because he loves getting his ego stroked and will do anything to be in the spotlight. He cannot be trusted and would ruin the program if involved. On top of all that he's a terrible coach, look at his record. That's my opinion just like you you have yours. See we both have one.
