Here's my theory on the booster war and coaching search we saw last week...

Disclaimer: I'm no insider. This is just what I believe has happened.

First, I believe Jon Gruden was genuinely interested in the Tennessee job. I don't think he would just troll Vols fans with things like "never say never" or yelling "rocky top" on radio if he had zero interest. I also think if he came to Tennessee, he wanted full control of the program like Saban has at Alabama. I think the Haslam's balked on this request which is why the initial talks between him and Tennessee fell through. The Haslams care more about keeping their power than they do about what's best for Tennessee. This is what led to the booster war we saw last week.

I think the Haslam's tried to hire Schiano behind the backs of the other boosters who thought Gruden was still in play. After the Schiano fiasco occured, the other boosters finally had the ammo to take the Haslam's out. That is what happened Friday. Fulmer was the choice of the anti-Haslam contingent of boosters while Sigmon was the Haslams choice. Beverely Davenport picked Fulmer over Sigmon cause she feared the other boosters pulling their money out of the program more than the Haslams.

Now I believe Fulmer and the non-Haslam boosters are trying to make another run at Gruden. I think they're gonna finally offer him the full control he wanted that Jimmy Haslam wasn't going to allow and make him say no. Don't know if he'll accept but I hope he does because he's the only person IMO that can get Tennessee back to prominence.

I still believe Gruden to Tennessee is possible.

I observed Phil throughout his career and he’s super conservative. I think he’ll make a very conservative hire. Les Miles to Knoxville.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. I do agree with you, but I think this time Fulmer may swing for the fences because he knows the livelihood of the football program depends on this hire.

Simply put.....

If Tee Martin , Lane Kiffin, chad Morris, or Les Miles is hired things have changed.

These are who one big guy don't want....

If not from this list...... business as usual just flashy show to distract from who he wants hired.

Please put that Gruden fairytale to bed, it was all nothing but wishful thinking and an opportunity for Jon to get some free publicity, which he loves.

The program really needs proven college level coaches that have actually coached and won games and championships. Gruden is a TV rock star and if he really does come back to coaching it will be with the NFL, not with a bunch of 18 year old kids.

I just wish the entire Gruden threads would be deleted by the moderators.

Very good post D4H. Although have your flame suit ready beacuse many are going to come after you. People say that Gruden was never interested in the job and was just trolling us. Yet we havent heard a peep from him or his people. That doesnt mean that much anyway. But if anyone doesnt believe there wasnt some real interest from Gruden they are just being intentionally stupid. Gruden wanted the job in 2012. He wanted full control like you said. But the mosquito d**k Jimmy Haslam wouldnt allow it.

Repeat in 2017. The mosquito d**k makes his power known again. Now we have some idiots on here that think Fulmer was part of a coup to torpedo hiring the mediocre Leach. Laughable and sad. All that being said, I dont think Gruden is in play at all. I dont think he intentionally trolled us or anything. I believe, like you, that Gruden wanted absolute control and Haslam had none of it again. As long as Haslam is here, there will be no Gruden.

As a matter of fact, I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt, that as long as Haslam is affiliated with Tennessee we will never make a home run hire.

Are you really that dumb? Gruden never was going to be and never will be the coach at UT, NEVER. You people started this crap and blew it out of proportion and at some point started believing in it. A middle of the road NFL coach and one who would be an abysmal failure in college. Luckily the people in charge are smarter than you and the rest of your Grudenite brethren.

That's my concern. Les Miles is far too old to begin a rebuild effort. Phil Fulmer is just radically conservative enough to pull such a stunt by hiring Miles.

I can’t believe that Coach Fulmer would give up control over the football program to Gruden, or anyone else. He just got control! He is going to want to have control until things stabilize. And that’s the way I think it should be.

I’m not convinced Gruden is really interested.

And he’s not my choice.
