Here is some real truth

We may not win this year with a QB change, but the change could help us win in the future.

If a QB is so fragile they can’t take a loss and learn from it, we might be better off learning that early on rather than 4 years down the road.

When teaching my oldest to drive I got him in an empty parking lot and had him stop and then cut the wheel all the way and give it a lot of gas to to feel the power that’s available. As quick as I could I also got him on I-40 going 70 mph to slow things down when he was in the neighborhood driving 30.

A QB going through some tough times against some playoff caliber teams might help slow the game down against the other guys.
Good parenting right there

We all want to win and we want to win now, I do as much as the next guy but we are never going to get back to the top if we keep doing what we have been doing for the last 12 years. We can blame it on everybody from the Big time donors, the AD, the school Administrators, hell the water boy for that matter and maybe all of those are the problem even we as fans have had something to do with it.

This should give you an idea of what our coaching searches look like: Tennessee coaching search timeline: A series of wild events from Butch Jones to Jeremy Pruitt

Please tell me what great coach would want to come here knowing from the day he signs the contract he has no more than 3 years at the most before we must be back to where we were in the mid to late 90's.........25 years ago !!!!

We all bleed ORANGE and we all want nothing but the best for OUR VOLS but this merry go round will never stop until we give a coach a chance and or pay the big bucks for a big time coach and saddly if our past history is any indication neither of those things are going to happen any time soon.
So we would be winning championships right now if we didnt fire Butch??..get a clue. The firing timeline is not the problem. It's the hiring. A good coach would come here for the same reason they go anywhere...the money. Bad coaches get fired here for the same reason they get fired anywhere....the money. When fans and boosters stop spending or threaten to stop spending, coaches get fired. The reason this merry go round never stops is because fans keep settling for mediocrity.

It's our fault that THE HEAD COACH AT UT CAN'T RECRUIT A QUARTERBACK?

sure...

And? Would that have been a bad thing?
Uhhhh clearly after what he did in the 80s and the foundation that was built for the 90s teams. He had the rug jerked out from under him when he had this program at an elite level. He inherited a dumpster fire like this and we’ve had so much off and on turmoil that we haven’t had more than 2 or 3 solid recruiting classes in a row since Fulmer left basically. The D has regressed this year clearly, but at halftime of the GA game we thought we were almost back. It’s a horrid 3 game stretch, but let’s see what he does the rest of the year. He’s got a great class coming in next year and we will be gaining a lot more players than we lose. I do blame the coaches for not having Bailey more prepared. I get no spring ball and his quarantine stuff getting him behind, but he should’ve been taking 2nd team reps all along. At this point they need a shot in the arm and he’s your best bet.

We dont expect to be back in 3 years.

We do expect not to lose to Ga state and get blown out by KY in year 3.
That is the red flag the current coaching staff will not get in 5,7 or 10 years. Losing but being competitive is one thing, losing bad and showing a steady regression is a different animal.

What coach do you think takes a job expecting to be allowed to fail for 5 or 6 years... destroying the recruiting base... before being fired? Bama went through a series of 3 or 4 year coaches before hiring Saban.

The last two years of Jones denied someone else a great opportunity to take the program forward. He is the POSTER child for what you get by tolerating incompetence in the name of "stability". He underperformed his talent. Recruits and rival recruiters saw it. Good players stopped coming... and he left the roster about as bad as it was when Fulmer was fired and this frustrating cycle started.

The RIGHT coach will NOT be a guy afraid of being fired because he loses too much. The RIGHT coach won't need to find excuses for blowout losses or losses to teams that should have been put away by half time.

I'm not calling for Pruitt to be fired yet. But he needs to take a "retreat" and put things in perspective during the off week. He needs to figure out that playing a younger QB now while he may not give you the absolute "best chance to be successful" now... is an investment in future wins. Whatever is going on on HIS defense... needs to be fixed NOW.

I agree with most of your post. I'm not done with CJP yet either however I can see not too far down the trail and there is a split coming and CJP needs to get on the one that will take him to a few wins and show the fans there is a future at UT for football. Playing JG week in and week out is not the future, it's the past, a loser path of which he's one of the worst QBs ever in UT history regarding wins. His team is going backwards on defense where they were borderline brilliant and he needs to get that turned around asap. If this means firing people, fire them without fear or favor, get the %$#@ing job done. If you show the team and fans there is a blue sky coming they'll get behind this teram and CJP asa coach. Trotting JG out there in a losing effort is not trying to make this team better, it's the reverse, it's demoralizing.

Best worded analysis yet on the current situation and Pruitt’s decision making. The JG issue is affecting the morale and performance on both sides of the ball.

Enough money will get most anyone...Jimbo to A&M is a nice example of that.

Jimbo left a flaming mess at FSU before his reputation was soiled and will struggle to ever win his division. He’s a great recruiter but just an average game day coach imo. He is a smart businessma - or at least smart enough to hire the best agent.

I think after the USC mess he wants a shot at the big time...and UT is in a perfect spot if Fulmer doesnt let CJP kill it like they allowed butch

I think enough money would get kiffin here

Sadly, Tennessee is not the big time anymore. For Kiffin it would be a lateral move if he came here. Your right though money talks and and BS walks.

With everything going on this country, UT football was our last glimmering hope for 2020. As fans we try to explain away the failures with “what if’s” and “Kiffin” talk. Our team is mediocre and the coach isn’t very bright. The QB is division III caliber. My advice is lower your expectations at least for this year just to help with mental sanity. If not, as fans we’ll keep beating the same dead horse every week. We all know changes need to be made too to bottom in the program.

It never fails to amaze me that as soon as anyone even mentions the fans everybody has a s@#$ hemorrhage . I never said it was the fans fault. I said it could be a number of things or a combination of all of them. The article I was referring to just showed the time line and what we had to choose from.

Before that kiffin left in the dark if night and no coach wanted the job because it was to close to signing day so we got Dooley. We fire Dooley (which never should have been hired) and get Lyle and he says we are going to have the best coaching staff in the country and we know how that worked out so then we get Pruitt after what was a PR fiasco.

Now look at what we had to choose from and who turned us down and explain what we could have done that would have gotten us farther along than we are now..

Most coaches probably don't see TN as this great program anymore. We are a middle of the pack SEC team.

the right coach will deserve and require sufficient time to rebuild the program. we don't have the right coach yet. when we do, he will show incremental improvement on the field and we will rally around him. Pruitt was a last minute desperation hire and that is not the kind of selection you ride or die with.

Not true...if they are old enough to coach they are old enough to know UT is no middle of the pack program with the right coach. Our ceiling/support with a little on field competence is waaauyy higher than a Mizzou/ Ms state ect

Not really. Guys with rare abilities flash almost immediately. Dobbs showed his athleticism very quickly. Look at guys like Fields, Tua and Lawrence. Saying Maurer has rare talent is dumb.
Are you claiming Maurer didn’t “flash” almost immediately? I’d say he did and it was a constant “flash” that lasted an entire half vs UGA last year. Fast forward a week later he “flashed” until landing on his head vs Miss st. Fast forward a week later he “flashed” AT Alabama.

That was a piss poor argument because it backfired in your face the moment you hit send.

maurer had a shot to take the job last year until he got hurt...shrout or how ever you spell it dosnt have it between the ears....bailey got caught up in the corona or he would already have won the job....its all about the qb at this point and unfortunatly we are stuck w/ j.g....you build around the qb...most of the rest of the pieces are in place....it sucks but it is what it is.

And then there is the defense.
