Herbstreit picks Vols to start 2-4

But UT was a nationally relevant program. We were one of the top 10 teams year in and year out and everyone knew it. I'm not sure I can remember back to our last top 10 squad.

Battle would never have made us a national recruiting powerhouse - ever.

Majors is the man who put UT back on the national map.

The media attention that UT got by getting Majors to come back home right after his NC at Pitt was, and may always be unparalleled in UT football history. It was one of the most exciting times to be a Vols fan. I can't recall any other time in our history, except winning the NC in 1998, that approached that level of optimism.

the pre-2005 outlook was some of the most ridiculous optimism I can remember. We momentarily turned into Alabama as a fan base.

Johnny had brought this team light years since taking over the disaster that he walked into.

Pretending that we were anything but nationally relevant at the end of Majors' tenure is absurd. We had a couple of tough seasons, but I'm sure you remember Majors' last couple of SEC titles and final national rankings, right?

Majors without any doubt whatsoever put us back into the national recruiting scene.

Head coaches get too much credit for the successes they enjoy and too much blame for the failures they endure.

The staff you surround yourself with and the players taking the field make a bigger difference and deserve more of the praise/scrutiny.

Oh and too large a piece of the pie! ($$$$$$)

BULL! That is not true. UT was good (real good) twice in Majors time at UT. Both years were out of no where. Battle did a good job. Given time, he could have been great!!! JMO! Majors had a TON of talent with Streeter in his first 3 years and did NOTHING!!!!!!

Ok! I will buy most of that. But...how many of those years was UT in the NC hunt???? The Cotton Bowl year was great, but not close to a NC and Tony Robinson's sr year was great. If not for his knee injury, I think UT wins the NC. Again ...that is a different discussion. But that was the only year where they were close. They came from no where that season. To this day.......it is my fav UT team!!!!!! I think Battle could have done the same things Majors did, or more.

Yes I agree also, was a great time , one of my good friends played on that team, with not so good SANDERS....Everyone was haveing so much fun and the team chemistry was awesome.......

He's a Big 10 / Ohio State homer and is always trashing the SEC.

Actually he has nothing but nice things to say about the SEC of late, almost to the point of embarrasing. Kind of hard not to after what has happened to his bucknuts the last 2 years

And what happened to him when he played against an SEC school in the Citrus Bowl :whistling:

all I know is if we start 2-4 then something needs to be done.We are too good to play like that its an embarassment to the program. If that happens I say get rid of fulmer, chavis, and maybe even clawson, because I sure havent seen any difference in our offensive play than before same old fashioned typical tennessee offense
