Hendon Hooker QB Transfer from VT

With well practiced plays, good play calling, good blocking, and good overall coaching, he is a productive QB. Will he get that here?
IMO, he did not get all of that at VT. I am married to a Hokie, so I have watched HH play. VT’s program is struggling right now, much like UT. They have a lot of similar issues... Fuente has struggled with delivering on some of the expectations and several units have seemed to lack development. HH missed time earlier this season, Covid, and then had several solid games (excluding WF)... As others have mentioned, HH reminds me of Dobbs and I am glad to have him in Knoxville. He is a good kid with the potential to be a great addition to the Vols.

I’m trying to get feedback from a Hokie fan I know here in SwVa today. Asked them if they believe it’s a plus or minus he is leaving the program.

Edit: they said he was a mediocre or a lower tier Qb. Of course it could be sour grapes from them since he hit the portal. He was for the most part a two year starter according to them.

I am calling sour grapes... especially if they think Fuente has given their team all of the things you mentioned. HH entered the portal once before (when he wasn’t playing ). He was stuck behind Josh Jackson on the depth chart (who transferred after getting hurt against ODU). After HH got an opportunity, I think he showed he was the best QB on the roster. Last season, they also picked up Jerry Kill to assist with their offense. IMO, he helped to turn the team around as well. I used lived next to the VT football trainer, and from discussions with him, he thinks there are several underlying issues between players and their coach.

Their message board said he holds the ball to long and stares down receivers. May not handle the toughness of sec. First response is to run. May be a better runner than Guarantano.
May be a better runner? Everyone is a better runner than JG and that includes my 8 year old neice and 89 year old grandmother.

Well..I can easily admit JG is better at football that I am..but that ain't saying much..
If you can count to three Mississippi in your head and either throw it away or tuck and run than your stats would be better than JG'S... Pretty sure he had 6 TDs the entire season... He almost had more pick sixs and scoop and scores than he threw touchdowns...I'm sure we could teach you how to throw a screen pass, swing pass, or slant better than him. All those throws are within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. Your noodle arm is better than him throwing rockets at people's feet or 5 feet behind a receiver.

He lost his job because Fuente is a ****ing idiot. I have cousins in the Roanoke area, big VT fans and I can assure you they absolutely wanted this kid to be the guy. I’ve texted them about it since I heard the news he was leaving, before I even knew he was going to UT, and while they are bummed he left they don’t blame him at all because Fuente was fumbling around with the QB room. As far as development, they don’t have any faith in Fuente developing Jack **** but you don’t necessarily have to ā€œdevelop,ā€ this kind of player. Look at his measurements; 6’4 220. You can’t develop the speed he has and you can’t coach that strength. He’s what is referred to as a freak athlete. And you can’t knock him for playing in the ACC this year. . . Did you see the defenses in the SEC? Dude would have ran all over Florida’s defense I’ll tell you that. And to those knocking him for a bad Clemson game, well that happens to pretty much every QB against Clemson over the last 3-5 years minus like 3 so. . . I can assure that some very hardcore VT fans are bummed he is leaving and think UT got a really solid player.

Going to just bump this thread. Granted he didn’t light Florida’s defense up he was 13/23 for 220 yards, 2 TD’s and no turnovers. Also had 23 yards rushing and that includes sacks. Also, the fact that he only got sacked 3 times has to count for something considering he had a DL in his face multiple times, including that long TD. I rewatched that a few times because I just could not believe he even got the pass off, much less dropped a dime like he did.

Not sure how much eligibility he has left and I’m too lazy to look it up but if you guys don’t think he’s clearly the best option going forward you are crazy, and if Heupel doesn’t see that I would definitely be concerned as a fan. Also, it’s his first year in Heupel system, which is much much different than dumb dumb Fuente’s. Imagine what he could do next year.

Anyway, GG last night Vols. First half gave me flashbacks to that damn LSU game last year. Definitely saw some heart on that team. Still hate ya though and I expect nothing less than for that feeling to be mutual. Cheers.
