Helton's offense, QB run question ?

We got ourselves a good old fashioned “he said, he said”...

No we don't.

We have actual recent information and quotes from the actual person we are discussing and two year old conjecture from a writer.

When this whole playcall controversy happened those involved, Heltons and Tee, and the radio guys who talked to them all said they don't know why some people ran with the idea that Tee wasn't the third down play caller. The Heltons and Tee have all made several statements confirming that Tee called the plays and Helton had input.

I know Helton ran Brohm's offense at WKU and they did have some neatly designed QB runs. They weren't QB run heavy but every once in a while QB would just take off to keep the defenses guessing and honest. I do not remember USC running those plays with Tee and Helton as Co-OCs.

Does anyone here know if Helton's offense has those elements ? Or was that more Brohm thing ?

I am surprised we did not try a single run play with JG. I know he is not Dobbs with his legs but WKU offense did not have a big time runner too. Just little runs here and there.

Thoughts ? Insights ?
Pruitt said today in presser that, though it doesn't hurt to have someone who can make a play, from what he's seen and studied, running qb's are less effective towards the end of the season, where they've been banged on all season. Do think JG had more than a few opportunities...it looked like the bootleg was there most of the day.

Spoiler alert, JG isn’t fast.

“For the past two seasons, Tyson Helton shared some of the play-calling duties with offensive coordinator Tee Martin. Earlier this season, he said he was involved “a lot” with play-calls on third downs, often passing situations, as well as in the red zone.”

I just don't think guarantano is a running quarterback
He definitely doesnt look to run, but with his mobility I think it would give defenses one more thing to have to prepare for if they'd run him a handful of times a game.

UT doesn't have a running threat at QB and JG was one of few bright spots for this team.
I don't think running JG is the answer, maybe once in a blue moon, but not on a consistent basis.
With this Oline, a QB that could run would certainly help this team, however the Vols just don't have one. Here's to missing JDobbs.
Go Vols

JP got asked about JG not having any designed QB runs Saturday. Believe he said something like running would put him at more risk of taking hits and getting injured and that’s not what they want to happen right now.
Thank you. That is what I thought would be reason too.

Hes no Josh Dobbs, but hes not a statue either.

Based on what? He didn’t show mobility last year and I’m willing to throw that out of the book as the staff gave up.

Secondly and most importantly, not once in the spring or summer did anyone talk about him having speed or mobility. I’m sorry but I find it hard to believe you have first hand info on him being some mobile, scrambler while all the beat writers never mentioned it.

It's just one play and it's a spring game, but the guy has enough speed we could run him 5-7 times a game. 1:18 mark.

Now quit being a douche

Additionally he was recruited as a dual threat quarterback. He runs a 4.6 40...its not like hes Justin Worley back there. The dude can run.

I'm not suggesting hes Michael Vick, but if we let him run some and show another wrinkle to this offense it gives DCs one more thing they have to scheme for. Hes not gonna run for 50+ yards a game. We don't need him to. Just need one more look in this offense is all I am saying

We need to get over the idea that there are Josh Dobbs all over the recruiting landscape out there. He was a once in a generation type player on The Hill. Hurts at Bama has the running ability but not the mind to read defenses combined with Josh's arm. Looking back we now all know how much his talent covered for a lot of other issues taking place under Jones. JG is JG, Dobbs was Dobbs, we did see JG tuck and try to get to the goal line and it did not happen.
I would have to place Hurts'overall game a little above Dobbs. There is a more than slight difference in the record of the teams that they have played on.

I really thought this had gotten settled when Tee and Helton both cleared up the misconceptions. I didn't know people were still repeating this when all the coaches plus Swain and Ainge ,who both spoke to Tee about this, have all confirmed he had input and Tee called the plays. Sometimes he used a suggestion from Helton. Not the same as Helton calling third down plays.

Key words are "shared some" and "involved alot" not called the plays or responsible for third down.

Some reporters for some reason took that and ran with it. You are literally ignoring the words from Helton's mouth. His brother and Tee said the same thing. It doesn't matter what a reporter's conjecture is when the actual coach cleared it up 100%

Helton said he helped. He did. he didn't call third downs. His words. So I don't know why people are still confused when he clarified the situation.

His inexperience showed the first game.

The sites determine position and ranking. You can't change your own info.
I wish they would just do away with the division and just make it quarterbacks. But I would not be surprised if there is not some politicking going on in the background to try to get reclassified just like you have the background politicking for the Heisman.

Respectfully disagree. Dobbs was much better. Put Dobbs on Alabama, and his numbers woukd have blown Hurts out of the water. Dobbs is one of the best DT QBs the SEC has ever had.

This is the debate that can never have a resolution
