I'm getting ready to move and get a new internet service through my local cable provider. I wanted U-Verse but won't be able to get it because it's not available at my house. I will be gaming and streaming Netflix and On Demand through Direct.

My options are

10 MEG for $44/mo
20 MEG for $56/mo
30 MEG for $68/mo

Is 10 MEG high enough for gaming online and for streaming without a lot of lag and buffering or do I need the higher MEG? Thanks in advance!

Stoked, how many people are in your household? If it's just you, you're fine with 10. If you've got a roommate/partner that is a heavy user (Netflix, etc) or if you've got kids, I'd go 20.

Me, my wife, and my two boys are all power users - and we get by on 18.

My fiancé and my daughter. My fiancé will only have her phone connected and my daughter will have her iPod. We most likely only stream Netflix when we watch together.

Surely it's nothing for them to bump up your speed and take more money from you anytime. I'd just start with 10. Ideally, that would be enough for a netflix stream and online gaming. If it ain't working, give them more money.

Know what kind of ping you'll have? That could kill online gaming.

That's true. They love taking money from their customers lol. So that shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure what kind of ping I'll have. I stream Netflix more than I game online though. My main concern is buffering with that.

You could probably get by on 5 for Netflix, if it's truly 5. If you aren't doing both at the same time, 10 should probably be enough.

When you say Direct... I don't think the internet is through Direct. If you bundled it with TV, then your internet is probably through someone else. Any idea who that is?

It's a little expensive, but I've seen nothing that beats Charter's Internet service

I hate Comcast. Their customer service is complete crap, but their internet service is pretty good. And I get 25 Mbps for $45/mo. So it's not that expensive, either. Of course, that's an intro offer. But I'll just call when it's up and threaten to cancel.

I'd get 1G fiber if I could but that appears to only be out in Farragut in the Knoxville area right now.

If/when terrorists attack our network, I hope Comcast gets it first. They are a deplorable company and my only choice other than DSL in my area. I'm terminating my account with them THE DAY another reasonable option is available.
