Help is coming for the OL (2015 class), but...

At this point, I don't know why Butch won't take up Downs on his offer to block for him. Downs said he knew he didn't have good hands for an end, but would be glad to block. He has the size and he couldn't much more intimidated at playing OT as anyone else out there. We need willing volunteers. Maybe our defensive linemen can volunteer to play both ways like old one platoon football days of the 50s.

Put him at fullback as lead blocker for any tailback healthy enough to play. :)

GO VOLS!

They inherited 3 NFL quality o-linemen last year along with senior RB and junior QB - and still their offense sucked.

Care to list the skill players?

A third year jr QB with little playing experience - in his first year of a new system - with no skill players to throw the ball to....

It's not as simple a "they sucked".

What concerns me is Crowder, Kerbyson, and Jackson all have been in the program now for what 3 years?? Shouldn't at least that half of the line be doing something? Hard to believe that Kerbyson was named most improved player in the spring,,geez.

Would not hold my breath. He showed up at Chattanooga and look at Ole Miss season.

YOu never can tell about these recruits. There have been many of them that we thought we had figured out but they committed the opposite of where we had predicted.

I expected more out of Jackson at this point, just from a physical standpoint.

Aside from that, I think we're looking at what can be expected. If they're gonna learn, this is going to be a good year for a learnin.

It's just the second year for even the oldest player on the team. That's not two years. Right now it's 1.5.

Not three years. 1.5.

Big difference.

Mosley is 370? That sounds too heavy to me. We've had a lot of BIG offensive linemen over the years who were not good because they had zero athleticism. The best offensive linemen are /agile/, not just big.

Mosley may not be ready for next season. It depends on how soon he can get in the weight room. If next season starts and he is in the same shape that Blair was in this season, then he does us little good.

I worries me that sometimes I think I know more about foosball than most posters here.

Hopefully help is on the way from Jack Jones, Venzell Boulware & Zach Stewart. I think Chance Hall has a knee ligament injury & Riley Lovingood is a long snapper.

Would have helped both.....Kerbyson is serviceable or better on the right side of the line.

I think this is a great point. When Gilliam went down and Kerbyson moved over to replace him, it really changed everything about his technique. Left tackle is a tough position to play. Then you have to replace Kerbyson with a true freshman. That freshman is also then required to handle his man 1 on 1 with for the most part zero help from a TE.

Earlier I was reading where Gilliam was warming up with the second team O-Line Saturday. I don't know what his time table to return could be, but IF he is able to return and be back to 100% that could really make a huge difference to our line. Will we be able to run effectively? probably not, but will Worley have more than 2 seconds before he is clobbered?? As fast as the Defensive is getting to Worley, we are currently unable to throw an accurate deep ball or often even get rid of it. IF we can get Gilliam back and kerbyson can be moved back to the right side, maybe just maybe we can protect Worley long enough to start opening our deep passing offense up. Getting some deep passes to go with our short game could open up our Offense the second half of the season.

He's 100% responsible for having "Chicken Shi!te," then.

4* - Austin Sanders (Bench)
4* - Dontavius Blair (Bench)

Instead, he's playing two 3* OL that are true freshman. One was recruited as a DT and converted toward the end of fall camp.

It's THEIR job to either recruit chickens, rather than chicken shiite, or develop chicklings into chickens.

Your lack of basic football knowledge is scary....

The most disturbing thing about this young Oline is the fact that they seem to be getting worse. After rewinding and watching the game closely it's apparent that there is a lack of effort on blocking by the Oline....following the Vol's for many many years and the Oline play is the worst I've ever seen....enough said!

No they aren't. More film for coaches to see what they don't do well, therfore better defensive game planning to confuse them.

Skill players = Pig, Neil, Lane, North, Croom, D Young. Not bad at all, especially given a NFL type experienced oline (which underperformed because Bajakian's spread system/schema sucks).
Also their offense sucked at Cincy - they never beat a top 25 team, even with their own handpicked and experienced players.

Are those 2 the only 2 college football players who didn't pan out halfway through their first year?

I think so from what I read on VN. :)

Maybe we should start threads in the recruiting forum with .gifs that show explosions being put out and the caption under Denzel saying 'Bust'.

Go Vol's

09 and 10 were both rough. But, I must agree this OL is worse than I could foresee. Just hoping that they can put together an average showing by years end.

Here's something that bothers me in this OL disaster. The staff soon machine.
Remember how they spoke of Jashon being amazing beyond his years over on the switchover. Remember when the LT went down on game one and how they said Blair had really turned the corner in practice. Then I think it was just last week one of the coaches talked about the huge strides the unit had made in the week following one of the disasters?

I don't know if they are just spinning to support their guys or appease reporters. If so, that's a little bothersome.
What worries me though is that some or all of them actually believed any of that. If so, that scares three heck out of me concerning their ability to evaluate quality.

Don't get me wrong I've been impressed with our "best in America" staff and support them. But this smokescreen (I hope) or cluelessness (I fear) does not impress positively.
