Can't get a Tennessee license tag in NC! Any fellow North Carolina Vols that can help please contact state DMV and add your name to the list. If they get enough requests, they will add a tag. Sorry Mods if you need to move this. Why is it I could order a UF tag but not a UT? Help please!

There's a lot of Gator fans after their recent success. Seemed to pop up from nowhere

good luck guys, lived there from 2002 to 2008, put my name on the list two separate years, think we needed 500 applications and never made it. hope you can get a group together that will create interest and make it happen!

I'm in. Wanted one for a while. NC really should have one being a non-sec/non-rival border state and all...

I will sign up. I tried to get a UT plate in VA for years as a board member of the alumni assocoation but had no luck (same thing, needed X number of signatures). If anyone has a connection with the various alumni groups in Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington, etc you have to have their support and mailing lists to have any success.

I don't live in nor plan to live in NC anytime soon but the following may help.

I was told that in some western states, the DMV allows you to create your own plate design. Kinda like the Jerry Seinfield episode where Kramer had plates that said "Ass Man." I'm not sure if this includes permission to select a logo like maybe the Power T but check the DMV website to see what you are allowed to do. I took a fast look and it seems you have some leeway. https://edmv-sp.dot.state.nc.us/sp/PersonalizePlate Now, if you mean bona fidi Tennessee plates in NC, you may be out of luck. It's NC not Tenn. You live in the state, you are licensed to drive by that state. They don't want state generated money going across the state line.

Same problem here in Va. We can get Notre Lame and Penn St. but cannot get UT. If signatures are required we should be able to get enough here in Bristol alone. Alot of UT fans in Bristol, Va still.

I have a few numbers for the NCDMV that I am told will work but they have been busy each time I call. The direct number to the office that handles specialized tags 919-861-3575 and the general question line is 919-715-7000. Thanks for the help Volnation!

Moving to Durham next month; I'm in too.

I was going to say that after you start paying NC income tax, sales tax, personal property taxes, etc. you might not want to send any extra money to Raleigh then I saw you're in Taxachusetts right now so never mind.

Ordinarily, the "never mind" would be right, but I've been renting up here and am buying in NC, so that's actually new taxes. I have no idea how the income taxes compare, just that I'd better be getting all of it back, with as low-paying as my job is.

Unless you're almost destitute, income tax is 7% and goes up to 7.75% once you get over $60k. Sales tax can vary by county but it's pretty much 7.75% everywhere.

Liquor is also pretty high since we've got state stores here. Living in Charlotte, I can buy mine in South Carolina where they have a better selection at cheaper prices.

VA's problem is not getting the signatures it's the fact they require 350 plates to be purchased at once in order to make them. Hard to get people to just send a check to some random person organizing it

I'm a PhD student. Does that count as destitute? Also, I am used to the sales tax, because we have 9.5% in Tennessee.

I spoke to a few more people and also spoke to a man that has been trying to get this thing rolling since 1996 I think he said. Basically, we need to get the president(s) of the various alumni groups to take this on. Wes Rucker tweeted that we are trying to get this thing going again. Hopefully we can make it happen. If you are in NC, email the local alumni groups to see if you can get them on board. I will do that here in Charlotte. Thanks for the help.

During the Big Orange Caravan tonight, the head of the Charlotte Alumni Chapter announced he is trying to make this happen. He is sending an email out in the next couple days to UT alum. He said he needed 300 signatures from NC residents in order to make it happen. something tells me it will happen. He mentioned the plate will have the Power "T" on it.

Here is an email address for a guy named Patrick Gray, who I believe is the head of the Charlotte Alumni Assn. If nothing else you can have him add you to the email he is sending out regarding the NC plate.
