Going to Neyland Stadium for the first time to watch the UAB game. I am taking a 1 year old so I need a little help on where to sit in the stadium...preferably with shading and where to stay.

Found some tickets in section F row 52. Good seats with cover?

Also, what about the Crowne Plaza downtown? Referred by a coworker.

I was planning on taking a child carrier backpack to put my son in while walking around enjoying the events before the game. Any problem taking a backpack into Neyland?

Is the Crowne Plaza close enough to walk to Neyland? If not, what about parking?

Thanks

I don't know, but here is a bump. Hopefully someone will answer your questions.

You are way more ambitious than I taking a 1 year old to the game. I hope he is not sensitive to loud noises. That said...

Don't be surprised if the cops at the gate want to search your backpack extensively. Since it is a child carrier they will probably let you take it in, but they made my wife and me leave a backpack at the gate that we were bringing blankets and shakers in a few years ago, even after we emptied it to prove no contraband.

Section F row 52 are good seats, but I am not sure if they are under cover. If not, they are close. It has been a couple of years since I sat in that general area. Maybe someone else can help you out.

Edit: From Gcrop's (very cool) link
Cover Rows 52 and up.
It will be close.

I have never stayed at the Crowne plaza, but it is probably too far to walk, especially with a 1 year old in tow. You may check to see if they have a shuttle to the game. That might be easier and definitely cheaper than parking.

I hope you get some good answers. Enjoy the game.

F-52 will put you behind the student section on the southeast corner of the stadium. Not good cover at all but the game is a 12:30 game so not much cover is going to be had for many people anyway.

Here is a "virtual Neyland" seating chart. Virtual Neyland
Here is a more specific view and info: http://www.gridscape.com/facilities/stadium/virtualneyland/F50.htm

I doubt they would let you bring in a backpack but truth is, there is not much space to put it if you did bring it in.....assuming the stadium is packed. Not sure what attendance is going to look like for that kind of an opponent after that kind of a loss.

Not sure about the Crowne Plaza.

Wow....Good luck to you with the 1 year old, i have an 18 month old and I know she isnt ready for Neyland yet. But, my season seats were G-row 53 last year...So as the other poster said you will be behind the student section, good seats, and you should have some cover because G-53 had plently. Good luck to ya, I will be in Y6 row 5 this year, stop on by!

There will be good cover there between 12:30 and 3:30? I figured the sun would be between high noon and above the pressbox. I didn't realize row 52 was tucked up under the overhang so well.

I will be right behind you in Y6. :good!:

Yeah, they will definitely search the bag. I've found that they search more extensively when you go through the ground level gates, but not as much if you enter at the big ramp. That could just be coincidental, however.

I will say that at one of the games last year, one of the police officers made a bomb joke as he was searching my purse. Never had that happen before. I wasn't entirely sure how to react.

Crowne Plaza is nice, but expensive. And there's closer options (like the Hampton Inn, which would be a pretty quick walk).

Someone has already covered seating nicely.

I recommend a cab for transportation.

It shouldn't be that much of a fare,
and you can get off on Cumberland
even with the stadium and still have
a good walk carrying a one year old.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm still debating taking the 1 year old but he doesn't mind noise. Now getting him to sit still for the entire game is another challenge. I pretty much know going in that it is doubtful that I will get to stay the entire game depending on how he is.

Crowne Plaza is definately expensive and it looks like it is a pretty good haul to the stadium. Will check out the Hilton or Hampton Inn. Think I will keep the carrier in the hotel if I am going to have to check it or get hassled.

sammy, I do not mean to be rude by asking this question but since I have the opportunity I guess I will. Why in the heck would you risk ruining the experience of those seated around you by throwing an one-year-old baby into the mix on gameday? I see people do this from time to time at various events, restaurants, etc. and it completely baffles me how people can be so inconsiderate of those on whom they are inflicting their kid(s). I don't want to single anyone out here, so any of you parents feel free to educate me here.

Thanks for the link on the seating. Didn't realize F was the student section and right next to the band. Glad I came on here before purchasing.

I am not a parent and there are instances where I know what you are refering to but at the UCLA game, a little boy (maybe 2 or 3 y/o) and his parents sat right behind me. The boy was VERY well behaved and everyone around us kept talking to him and playing with him.

I think a better question is why would you want to bring a child that young that can't enjoy the atmosphere or remember it when he gets older. The boy at the UCLA game hardly watched any of the game obviously.

Maybe they are just getting their son a jump on being a Vol fan. :good!:

I've seen the situation go both ways, good and bad. I think if you ask parents of young children, the vast majority of them will tell you that their kids are well behaved and certainly an exception to the rule, when in fact I am guessing that taking little kids out in public is a complete crapshoot. These parents have about as much clue as to whether their kids will act out in public once the action starts and everyone's attention is focused on something other than the kids as I do on whether to take a hit or stand on 16. Then what really amazes me are the parents who'se brood do start going ape and the parents sit there like it's all perfectly natural and shouldn't bother anyone on the least. Maybe this is a discussion better left in the pub, but to all parents of very young children I say do yourselves and everyone else a favor and hire a sitter.

As an "expert" (both as a Pediatrician and experienced parent), may I recommend that you not take your 1-year-old to the game. It will likely be very hot and the attention span of an average child that age is less than 5 minutes. You will be miserable, he/she will be miserable, and those around you will be miserable. Wait until your child is 4 or 5 before braving Neyland together.

If you have no choice (or choose to go against my advice), make sure you get seats that are on the west sideline in the shade and prepare yourself, in advance, to leave early.

Agreed. F-52 (east side) would be a burner in mid-September in the middle of the day.

If you don't have a hotel room lined up near the stadium you may be out of luck. If not, be ready to shell out some cash. Last time I checked it was a 2 night min around 149 a night. Use hotwire, I think the Holiday Inn downtown has some rooms available. I checked the plaza and it was a no go. Good luck.

I agree Kiddie. I have an 18 month old and I can't wait to take her to Neyland for the first time. But, there is no way that I am putting her and the people around me through it until she is at least 4. Probably more so on the lines of 5 years old.

As a father of 3, I agree with Doc. Even as old as 5 (or older), if the kid isn't really into it, you'll be leaving early with the gratitude of those around you.
