Not meaning to be a smart-allek ot the original poster but if you have that GPA and you are thinking public university why in the heck would you not stay in GA and get full tuition paid for with the HOPE scholarship? I guess that if your family has money to burn and it has been your lifelong dream to go to UTK then I could sort of understand this. Seriously though, UGA and GaTech are far better academic schools than UTK. For that matter, I'd rather go to GA State or Southern for free than put myself in debt or needlessly cost my parents money just to go to UTK. Counseling session over.

UGA has become extremely difficult to get into. Their SAT averages go up every year. Atlanta has so many kids feeding into the system that competition has become cutthroat.

I don't know what tuition is, but you might also want to look at Washington University in St Louis for journalism. Or MTSU or western kentucky for broadcast journalism.

Yea a couple of my High School friends are going to Wash U, but it is really expensive and they are very tight in acceptance. Also I won't have a shot at Northwestern, and it costs more in state than every out of state school I am looking at. It's around 35k in state, and that is just ridiculous. But UNC, Syracuse, Illinois, and Mizzou, are probably the 4 best Journalism schools So I would rather go to Mizzou and UI due to Money, and Location. I think I might just move to Knoxville after college to balance everything out!

Getting into UNC out of state and Northwestern are probably comparable.

As an aside, I'm a bit upset that this thread wasn't about a table dance.

I had a 1.8 and 21 on the ACT. I'm about to graduate this semester. What's my point? Well just be sure to fill out the personal statement and really put some time in it. Imagine you're hiring someone and write what you would want them to say. This is your only opportunity to really put a personal touch on your application, so make it count.

Yeah I would try and up the ACT, I had a 3.71 and a 26 and got in 5 years ago, but I know people who have been turned away recently with stuff similar to that.

Don't think my low gpa and act scores mean anything today though. Every year UTK gets more and more competitive. I never applied myself in high school, but luckily I had the military to whip me into shape.

IMO, though, the personal statement means a lot and I would try my best to put some thought in it.

I almost had the exact numbers when applying to UT a couple years back ( I am currently in my sophomore year). I had a 3.95 GPA and had a 26 ACT, and I got in. I was also from the state of georgia like yourself. You should be fine. Did you participate in any extra curricular activities such as sports or clubs? Also, did you take the SAT?

I'm really involved, just not a godd test-taker
