I'm applying to Tennessee with a 3.9 GPA, and I'm in the top ten percent of my class, but I have a 24 ACT score. What are my chances of getting into Tennessee?

Tennessee has become a lot more competitive than they use to be. I'm not sure what the average ACT/SAT scores are or GPA but the only thing that bugs me about GPA's is some people take easy classes and get a 4.0 where some students are taking AP classes and Honors classes and make lower GPAs' (Calculus, for instance). I know you get extra points for that but still. Hopefully you get in and your best bet would be taking several advanced classes in high school. Remember you can always take the ACT again and keep the higher grades from both test combined.Good Luck.

Oh I forgot to post that I'm in the IB program and my mom is an alumni so I have a legacy. I'm from Georgia though.

You have an okay chance - get the ACT to a 25 and you're automatically in.. GPA doesn't even matter once its above a 3.0. A few years back I had a 4.2 GPA and a 24 ACT and didn't get accepted till the spring semester (eventually got in to the fall like a month before school).

I also took all honors class, was in all the honors programs , family all went there etc.. so take the ACT a few times and get it to a 25.. basically what they're doing now is throwing the ones that don't have a 25 ACT out until the end and accepting those with the 25+. It's good they're upping their standards - but their method isn't fool proof for those who don't test well...(only took the test twice which was a mistake :p)

You will be sure to have fun in Oxford. I spent all 6 of my formative undergrad years there.

Your ACT needs to be higher to go with that outrageous GPA. You should be pushing 30 with almost a 4.0

IB/AP classes inflate the GPA, I agree that your ACT should be higher if you have earned that 3.9 (my wife teaches AP classes)
