This story was put out this evening by VolQuest.com. It was posted on another internet site.

"Rock Bottom" was the term Phillip Fulmer used to describe things after Saturdays home loss to Vanderbilt and that term does not just describe what occurred in Neyland Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Once again the offense's inability to make key plays has Tennessee home for the holiday's for the first time in sixteen years. But for Vol fans that is not the most alarming part to Saturday afternoon. The most feared part is what happened after the game leaving you to wonder if this program has hit rock bottom on, and maybe off the field as well.

As the Tennessee players left the field somewhere between five and ten players threw their helmets on the ground in disgust and left them there for managers and trainers to have to pick up.

Senior defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona was not one of those players, and indicated that those who did leave their helmets or threw them did not appreciate being a Vol.

"I would say they are immature and don't really appreciate what Tennessee has to offer," Mahelona said.

Mahelona was one of three Vol players who elected to speak with the media following the loss and said that the team was more than reeling from a season lost.

"Discouraged," Mahelona said of the locker room. "Hurt. There was a lot of emotion from this loss and the loss of the season."

The question is how lost is this program. After slinging his helmet on the ground causing several on the field to scurry. Senior offensive tackle Albert Toeiana cursed and spit on Scott Liston a cameraman who works on the stadium's Jumbrotron crew.

Fulmer, when made aware of the incident, said he would check into what happened and if Toeiana was indeed guilty of the event then he would not play his career ending game next week against Kentucky.

Toeiana has had his share of practice field incidents this season, but has remained in the starting lineup since the season opener against UAB.

And so with a season lost and a game to play, Phillip Fulmer starts the task of fixing a program that is maybe more broken than we know.

"I guess sometimes before you start building back you have to hit rock bottom," Fulmer said. "This is about rock bottom."

Now the better question is who do you start building back and does that happen next week against Kentucky.

And it will start with trying to see who wants to line up and play next week in the commonwealth. One of those who won't be able to play is linebacker Jason Mitchell who is heading to California for knee surgery and said he had to bit himself to major losing to Vanderbilt was real.

"It pretty much is rock bottom," Mitchell said. "This team here blew so many streaks against different things from losing to Vanderbilt to not going to a bowl game. We pretty much have hit rock bottom."

His advice to his teammates for the future was simple, avoid living the nightmare that he has lived this season.

"Don't let it happen to you," Mitchell said. "It does not feel good coming in ranked the number three team in the nation to be not even bowl eligible. My advice would be for them to work hard, love each other and give it all you have got and don't let this happen to you again."

That's sound advice not only do his players, but maybe to the coaches as well.

How in the world do these guys get up for Kentucky next week?

I dunno. I wouldn't be suprised if we lost. If I were in the players shoes, I could possibly be torn... It's gotta feel like there's nothing left to play for.

Well I hope we get the win anyways.

The rock bottom comment is pretty telling. Losing at home to SC and Vandy is about as big a reality check as you can get.

1. Why do you have to hit rock bottom to make necessary changes?

2. Is this about rock bottom, or do we need to lose to Kentucky to arrive at rock bottom, usa?

1. Beats me..

2. This is probably rock bottom and if UK beats us, it's a huge rock falling on us while we are sitting there.

Fulmer appears to have lost his team in more, deeper ways than he was aware of. I think this whole thing is really surprising to him.

It definitely goes way beyond playcalls and coaching strategy.

You're right GAVol. It's almost a little scary.

Can you remember any team with comparable talent ever having a season like this? I'm being serious, because this is unfathomable to me.

Seriously. The paper talent this team had preseason was matched and bested only by USC. I mean I can even understand two losses, but 6 or maybe even 7? Ridiculous!

This slightly resembles our 2002 team, but that was due mainly to injuries. This team has been demoralized looking since day one.

It's so hard to say. I love Leinart and Bush. But the rest of their guys...well, I just don't see what all the fuss is about. Their WR are no more talented than ours..."in theory." Our defense is much more talented than them.

Our offense is in such shambles it's hard to evaluate the talent with no production.

Aside from Clausen post-GA, weren't most of those injuries on the defense? Our offense stayed intact if memory serves.

Also, I was thinking of any school, not just TN.

Well... Given the strength of Pac-10 offense, I wouldn't call USC's defense terrible, but they are definitley not as good on that side of the ball as last year. Still, they seem to be the most complete team in the country.

Still... Every team in the SEC has some sort of major exploitable weakness this year, except maybe Auburn. We had a tough schedule but this was for sure the year to make another run at the national title.

Our offense is a mess, but the whole team is lacking focus amongst other things. We had to call a timeout to get the punt team on the field. That was a timeout that we really needed at the end. That's just skimming the top.

I'm not knocking USC, believe me. I'm just saying that they are not the most complete team I've ever seen. And they are not the most talented. But they play very well and look well-trained.

Their defense isn't awful, but they they lost of starters from last year's team which was really good. Our defense is more talented is all I'm saying.

Alabama did something similar to this back in 2000.

I guess that it close. But I don't think they had the kind of material we've got. You're right, though, because they were preseason #3.

I'm starting to become concerned that this attitude will carry over next year. its hard to shake something like this off. thats alone is a reason for a lot of changes this offseason.

As I read this thread, I see the names of some of the posters I most respect. However, let's get real. The talent on this team is wildly overrated. Poor coaching may explain losses to Florida and Alabama, but losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt tell me this team flat isn't that good. Name a team in D-I that has had more pathetic QB play than we have. For all the talk of our talent at receiver, name one guy on our roster you would actually count on to catch a cluch pass. The O-Line can't move VANDERBILT enough to convert 4th and 6 inches. The talent drain that began with Fulmer allowing Rodney Garner to go to Georgia, because Fulmer thought RG got too much credit, has finally come home to roost. Furthermore, given how incompetent this staff has proven to be, why would anyone put faith in their ability to evaluate talent?

Guys, this has been a "snowball effect" season, starting from the preseason hype of being ranked third in the nation; CPF predicting an SEC championship; and to a possible National Championship. CPF has not recognized the psychological factors that make a team successful. This team has been let to run its own program more or less. Without discipline, a winning attitude, respect for one another including among the coaches, this team has been its own worst enemy. I see a team of individual players who have a "no-care" attitude about one another. I see a group of coaches who are at a lost for answers or who are in denial. I am not a psychologist, but it is obvious the missing factor is the psychology of this team. As in a business, the success of a business is in the organization and management of employees. I haven't seen this type of "organization or management" of a successful team. It seems like every player has just been "going through the motions" to play a game without much emotion at all. Football is all about playing with emotion with your fellow teammates to reach a common goal: to win.
