Heisman Winner Chris Weinke on campus interviewing for Position Per John Brice

He spent 5 years working at IMG! Could be huge on the recruiting trail. No one has more talent
I agree. I would like to have Helfrich but would be cool with this hire as QB coach or co coordinator and be ok with internal coordinator. Weinke could get us quality recruits and 5 star players make 5 star plays.

Let's hear why he would a bad hire.

Who has he developed that necessitates him being a good hire? He worked with Cam Newton. Ok lets look at that. Seeings how Cam came out of college as a heisman winner and one of the best SEC QBs of all time, did he really need that much work? I mean he completed 66% of his passes in 2010. Weinke worked with him in 2011. So what?

Also, he has been the Rams QB coach since 2015. The QBs that have started on that team have been in the bottom tier of the NFL for the last 2 years. His only big accomplishment seems to be his Heisman. Other than that, it seems he hasnt done much. What QB has he developed that has really turned heads and made people go wow, man that guy Weinke developed is really good? Just because someone has a job in the NFL doesnt mean they are automatically good. Jeff Fisher is the prime example.

This. I'm not the biggest fan of Butch's system, but what most of it boils down to is talent...

Could Saban be in the NC game every year with the roster talent at UT? No, because the talent levels aren't comparable. He has a roster stocked full of Darek Barnett's and Alvin Kamara's..

Butch has done a good job recruiting considering where we were, but in reality, if we want to reach that next step of competing for championships on an annual basis, we have to recruit and challenge for the best talent out there...

Weinke and IMG would be great connections to have on the recruiting trail!

As far as the offense goes it boils down to talent and offensive line play. Look at the Bama game last year compared to this season. Offensive line play as a whole was better last year. Get that fixed and it will go a long way towards competing with the Tide again.

Not at all Tex, only my opinions that were related to a coaching candidate I'm not excited about potentially joining the staff.

Regarding your other snarky comment, that was in response to our friend Reader, not you, but if you're that bored, then sure, I'm your huckleberry.

When you deal in snark, don't snort at the change...Doc! :matrix: There's no EXCHANGE with you in any honest dialogue. Your viewpoint is hardly unique but you seem pretty invested in it. If we don't agree with you, it's not because we're lesser Vol fans. :hi:

I do not think we should hire a QB coach solely because he might open recruiting connections to FL and IMG. Obviously that plays in favor of considering him and I'd like to have those connections, but find him another role on staff. We need a QB coach that can develop QBs and has a proven track record of molding QBs into stars. As many, including myself, have alluded to there is no evidence Weinke can do that. With JG and QD inheriting the reins of our offense, it's extremely important we get a QB coach that can develop those guys and put them in the best position to be successful at Tennessee.

I'm not disagreeing with you guys in saying he's talented. He was an amazing QB and has a Heisman trophy and national championship. He might turn out to be a great coach. But why does Tennessee have to be the place to take the risk and give him a chance to see if he succeeds? When can we go hire the best, proven coaches available?

Offensively, I agree. The offensive line talent is a difference....skill people not so much. With that said though, nobody has been able to run the football against the front seven of Bama. Their defensive talent and depth is just in another league...

In comparison to Larry Scott, Zach Azzani, and Ken Dorsey, the more I look into Chris Weinke, the more I like him. IMG ties will help with recruiting and he's worked with nfl qbs before.

Fair enough, he's been with the Rams since Feb. 2015, but it's not like they have stellar QBs or anything though.

Goff had a completion rate of 54.6%, 1089 yards passing, and 5 TDs through 7 games.

Keenum had a completion rate of 60.9%, 2201 yards, and 9 TDs through 9 games.

Can't polish turds. Plus, Goff needs a lot more than one year to develop no matter who was coaching him.
