Tennessee has never had a heisman winner, and is still 9th all-time in wins with 752. We also only allow an average of 12.2 points per game in 1117 games played and also score 22 points per game in those games. Pretty good stats if you ask me.

3 runner-ups, Johnny Majors, Heath Shuler, and Peyton Manning. Manning should have won it. You can thank the sportswriters for their Big 10 bias for that one.

Oh well. It would have been nice if Peyton wouldn't of been snubbed, but whatever. I am over that after almost 10 years, but I still have no love for the sportswriters.

Alabama has had 12 (so they say) National Championships and they have never had one either.

The Big 10 media bias is so obvious. Does anyone believe if Woodson had played for UT, and Manning had played for Michigan, that Woodson would have won the heisman?

I lost an enormous amount of respect for the heisman after that point.

So is it a conspiracy that Troy Smith won it this year?? I think not. We all know Peyton got snubbed, but there is nothing you can do about it now.

Tennessee has had 4 runner-ups....Didn't Hank Lauricella finish runner up in 51!

I'm gonna get a lot of negative responses for saying this. But troy smith is winning the heisman because of his team's success. Based on his performance alone (and his numbers), he doesn't deserve it.

all this tells me is that Tee Martin should have won the Heisman in 1998.

Frankly, I quit caring about the Heisman long ago. It usually goes to a Big Ten player and if not that then a player from a media darling school such as USC. Manning will have the last laugh when he is in the Hall of Fame and people will not know who Charles Woodson is.

Sportswriters are kind of weird. Some of them have a god complex when it comes to sports and don't want to lose their power. It's seen everywhere Heisman, Top 25 Polls, them keeping McGwire out of the Hall of Fame.

I actually used to be a sportwriter from a little local newspaper and being local is a whole 180 from being in a bigger city. In the local kind of setting everyone is brown-nosing you and in the bigger cities people hate you and some might enjoy you.

Of course, cornerbacks don't get a lot of fame in the NFL... He can have a great career, but people do know who Woodson is.

Alabama probably bought 6 of their National Championships, I'm surprised somewhere down the line they couldn't afford to buy a Heisman trophy or two

I'm NO Majors fan, but he was screwed as much, if not more than Peyton. It's one of the top 10 reasons every Vol should hate Notre Dame.

In 1956, Paul Horning who was QB on a one or two WIN Notre Dame team, beat out Majors who was on a 10-1 SEC Championship team.

And yes, Hank was runner up in 51 as well.

I just simply hate Notre Dame because I can.....And really because they don't deserve the hype they get especially with years like this year....It makes me sick, I almost want to vomit talking about it

I think this is the case right now. I doubt many people under the age of 25 have any idea who Chuck Woodson is, who he played for, or that he won the H popularity contest.

I mentioned this in another thread, but a few weeks ago I watched the UT-Arkansas game from 1997 on ESPN Classic, and the announcers at the time were talking about how Manning was the "prohibitive" favorite to win the award. When they mentioned other candidates, Woodson's name never came up. And this was with only three weeks left in the season.

Just goes to show that Woodson really did win based on two weeks of Sportscenter highlights. I think a lot of voters weren't totally thrilled with Manning, probably since he never beat Florida, and were just waiting for some -- any! -- other viable candidate to emerge.

I feel you guys' pain when it comes to Heismans. Larry Johnson and Kijana Carter/Kerry Collins were beat out by guys I felt were less deserving. LJ sets an NCAA record for YPC, cleans up all the other awards(Maxwell, Doak Walker, etc.), and becomes the first 2000 yard rusher to not win a Heisman. It's all about the program hyping up the players, UT and PSU are classier than some programs in that regard and let their players do the talking for themselves on the field.

From a historical perspective Majors losing it was bigger than Woodson winning over Peyton.

When Majors lost to Paul Hornung, Hornung's Fighting Irish were 2-8 that year.

It's still motivation to root against ND, and Michigan..

No way in today's enviornment of 24 hour coverage, would a Heismann winner play on a losing team.

This made me break out my old VHS tape of the 1997 Tennessee/Vandy game on CBS...here is what was said then:

Craig James: "My gut feel is that my old friends over at ESPN are trying to promote their TV show. The people at the Heisman show...they're trying to build up a lot of curiosity. There's no guessing out there folks. Voters have already made their minds up (referring to if Peyton had a bad game against Vanderbilt)...Peyton Manning is going to win the Heisman. Number two is probably going to be Ryan Leaf and number three is going to be Woodson. That's how my ballot is going to be. A lot of selling going on right now...the curiosity is not there."

Jim Nance: "You get a feeling that a lot of people think Woodson should be number two. Michigan did not play a team in the top 30 in passing this year. And of the eight Big 10 teams they played only three averaged over 200 yards a game passing. Who should be number two Lou?"

Lou Holtz: "It doesn't matter who number two is...nobody remembers...I voted Manning one, Leaf two, and Woodson three."

Craig James: "Yeah...nobody remembers number two."

Two weeks later Woodson wins the Heisman...with Peyton only winning the South.

Still makes me sick to my stomach...

I don't even want to pull for the Packers, since they signed him..

Majors shouldn't have won that year either, Jim Brown should have won that year he got robbed if you ask me.

Didn't think about Jim Brown, but I wouldn't want a Syracuse player to win over Tennessee either.
