Heisman to Tennessee

There is a perfect storm brewing that could lead to UT's first Heisman winner in the next several years.

Tennessee has been down for so long that having a great year will be noticed much more than it would've been in the past. If CJH can get his offense humming and defense doing it's job, one of our QB's has a legitimate shot at the Heisman.

Comparing a phenomenal year in this league, with a high-octane offense against our recent struggles could be enough to launch a QB into Heisman talk.

I think this is possible, but I also want to see the hand-wringers, negavols, and window-lickers come out and cry about expectations, mock the thread, and whine about fans and what they think is a crappy hire. . . and see who actually reads the whole thread.

First Heisman hahaha. Even your most bitter rivals with hearts full of hatred know that PM was the Heisman winner that year. People watching CFB for 10 years or less know that. Reggie Bush didn’t win a Heisman. Neither have the trophies. Both were rightful Heisman winners. With the exception of a few years, the award has been a mockery since that fiasco. Peyton lost the publicity side; didn’t have billboards across the country and for some inexplicable reason Phil let Lloyd freakin Carr out-PR him for his guy. Rex Grossman also got jobbed; Eric Crouch lol. THANKS A LOT VOLS! Yeah I’m still salty about that 01 game.

I think Phil only cares about Phil's PR.

I'm more optimistic about winning a national title than I am a Heisman; historically we have very bad luck with the Heisman.

Peyton was cheated out of it by ESPN's marketing department.

Johnny Majors finished 2nd place to a Notre Dame QB with a 2-8 record who threw 3 TDs and 13 INTs in 111 passes. That'd be like Jarrett Guarantano winning it last year over Devonta Smith and Trevor Lawrence. Hornung is easily the worst Heisman winner in CFB history.

Heath Shuler also finished 2nd; albeit, unlike Majors and Manning, he wasn't "cheated" out of the award. Charlie Ward deserved to win that year; he had one of the best seasons in CFB history.

So we have a lot of Heisman 2nd place finishes and no Heismans. And we now have a coach who won a national title, but had a 2nd place Heisman finish, which is strangely on-brand.

Is there a Heisman curse? Seems like many of the winners bust in the NFL.

Majors wasn’t cheated out of the award, Jim Brown was.

With the benefit of hindsight, Brown should have won. A few thoughts though:

Brown scored almost half his TDs against an overmatched cupcake.
UT had far better team than Syracuse
Majors was by far the best player on an undefeated regular season team.

The Heisman has broken from its formula twice in over 80 years. Both years involved a UT guy finishing 2nd.

Brown would have been a good choice but based on the traditional Heisman criteria, Majors was just as deserving. In any case, Hornung had no business winning it although he was a great player.

It's always true that you're one great player away from the award, but I do think Heupel may be a bit of a quarterback whisperer. He does put you at an advantage.
