Heath Shuler Comments

Jeff George & Tim Couch cannot be lumped into this group. George had a pretty good career and Couch had some success at the NFL level.

We could all debate, I suppose, the various degrees of bust. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl but he sucked.

George actually had a career, but he was never anything to write home about given that he had as many raw physical skills as anyone i can remember.

Couch was horrible. He lasted a little while, but it wasn't because of production.

One of the funniest comments I ever remember reading here. Please, please, please tell me you're not serious about the 1994 team being the best in the history of UT with the exception of the quarterback. If you're serious, please post your address so we can have you committed.

You might want to go read over that roster and check the names and find out how many of the players on that team went to the NFL and did very well.

I've been watching UT football since the 70's, and no, I've not seen a better team. That was one of the deepest rosters we've ever had. We had receivers that could flat run and catch and when they got tired, the 2nd and 3rd team was just as fast. Our backfield was 3 deep with players that could all compete for first team, and the Defense and lines were strong as well. Had the game plan not got shot out of the water at quarterback on the first series of the first game, they would have looked a lot better and if we'd had Shular that year it would have been hard not to have won the national championship.

I've seen us have teams with a few players here and there that were better individually, but nothing like it on a total team level.

The '98 team would beat the '94 group til they got tired of hammering them, take a couple of drinks of Gatorade, then resume kicking the living Hell out of them.

I think the '97 team had more talent, but didn't play as a team as well as the '98 team. Jamal Lewis was one of the problems for '97.

It sure would be nice to see another Heath Shuler play at Neyland and keep the defenses honest with a rocket arm and great scrambling and running ability. Regardless of the NFL, what a great college player.

Yeah, he caused that loss to UF. The proof is in the 200 plus he ripped on vs UGA, you know a game that year JL actually played in. And there's also the ass kicking from Nebraska that Lewis caused.

He's such a bad team player that Cleveland gave a big contract to a 30 year old RB.

He was great for us. Just terrible in the NFL. I like the guy though.

If he could have had the luxury of learning on the sidelines for a few years I think he could have been very good! The fact that the Redskins through him in the fire with a very bad team wide situation was his eventual downfall. . .I don't think he ever recovered from that failure.

What was his problem from a true frosh who didnt start until the 5th game of the season.

If you are talking about Jamal, he couldn't keep his wheels under him. When he was healthy he was one of the best we've ever had but you couldn't count on him to be healthy. It's like having a very talented capable employee who misses work. Yeah, they may be sick, their granny died or whatever, but they aren't there doing the job.

Heath was an amazing QB for the big Orange...Also one of the toughest I've ever seen there...That boy could take a nasty hit and keep on truckin lol

Not too many quarterbacks that I've ever seen were willing to block for a tail back the way Heath did. I've seen him truck many a cornerback.

Mark Packer was talking to him by phone after the presser yesterday. Fuad Reveiz and Reggie Coleman were acting like angry kids and were trying to get Shular to get into their mean spirited diatribe. He would have none of it. Alll his actions were very classy unlike the others.
What exactly did Fuad say? He struck me as a stand up guy. I knew his brother Carlos and was a good guy.

He basically just had a tantrum but I couldn't really understand him. I too would have thought better of him.

Ok. I thought you were just talking about the 97 season becasue he played every game and rushed for almost 1400 yards. 98 and 99 were different.

Did Shuler talk with Fulmer or did he have a member of his staff write this up?

You don't know what you're talking about. Couch was drafted by a true expansion team. He got the hell beat out of him as a result. He did lead the Browns to the playoffs during the regular season before getting injured. He suffered a leg injury followed by a shoulder and elbow injury and was done.

Look, I don't want to hijack this thread about Heath. Shuler was a great college QB and I enjoyed watching him play.

I won't go so far to defend the previous poster's comment about the "best" talent ever... but the 1994 squad was loaded with talent.
