Head coaching candidates...

What is it with all the Freeze hoopla? Didn't the guy lose 25 games in 5 seasons at Ole Miss?
If he can average only 5 losses a year at Ole Miss in the west, imagine what he can do here. That would be a major step up from what we've had the past 12 years.

So, we already beat 3 of the 6 yearly opponents in the East. To be a significant upgrade, we would have to beat Georgia, Kentucky and Florida. We would have beaten Kentucky with a different qb. Beating Florida and Georgia won't be easy for any coach that comes to Tennessee.

My list has largely remained the same. I try to be realistic with people I believe we could obtain as coaches for the right amount of money.

1. Matt Campbell - it's ridiculous what he's done at Iowa State with the talent pool there. Can't say enough about him. Have raved about him in many other posts on here. Was my #1 in 2017 when we got Gomer.

2. Luke Fickell - slightly below Campbell and I think he will give the Big 10 more of a look and head for PSU or Michigan if they make changes

3. Jamey Chadwell - he may be the flavor of the month but he can also coach and do it well. He knows what it takes to win and has Myrtle Beach Tech in the top 10. That's some miracle work in and of itself

4. Hugh Freeze - with some caution. Mostly because of how thin skinned he is and not about his previous transgressions. We don't need another person as thin skinned as the trumpet blower was

5. Doc Holliday - I love this guy. He would be such a good fallback option if nothing else worked out but I'm fairly certain if they made the move now that even if you miss on Campbell and Fickell that Chadwell and Freeze is as far as you would have to fall.

Notable mentions just in case everything else went completely to crap - which there's no way you wouldn't get one of those in my 5 unless you just wait too long........

Billy Napier - I just like Chadwell better but Napier will likely be a solid coach at school in the Power 5

Joe Brady - the ONLY assistant I would even consider but I don't see him leaving the NFL anyway

Kalani Sitake - likely wouldn't leave BYU but you never know

Gus Malzhan - he would at least be a big jump over what we have now - he's basically the same guy as Freeze coaching style wise

If we get Drink how is he any better than Kiffin??

Edit:I know Kiffin did some more egregious things than just leaving after one year. If we hired Drink we wouldn’t be much better than Kiffin.
I think it would be OK if he were Kiffin with class and loyalty.

He beat Alabama twice, which is significantly tougher than beating UF and UGA.

Write the check Fulmer! 😂

Kiffin: We won't likely have him on the sidelines while Fulmer is AD. Unlike most people, I believe he worked miracles to keep USC afloat. His recruiting (with major restrictions) was off the charts. Some people just can't let by-gones be by-gones, fans included. If you really want to win and win big, I think he is by far the best bet.

Malzahn: I supposed everyone has figured out his offense, but he has made Auburn competitive in the SEC West, which has been the toughest place to play for the last several years.

Corn Bread: I picked Malzahn over him, but just barely. I am tired of changing coaches, and therefore, I want to see what he can do next year. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

Matt Campbell: Don't know much about him, but has apparently knows how to coach them up. It would be nice to have a coach who could make his players perform aboved their supposed talent level for a change.

Art Briles/Hugh Freeze: I'm sure they are good coaches. I'm just not sure they are exactly Tennessee's style.

I was told 50 years ago that Tennesse was not a program that needed to hire assistant coaches, or someone from a smaller program. I am a bit stubborn, but I have come to the conclusion that my uncle was right. We should stick with who we have until we are ready to make a big hire of someone who has won at a very high level. Who knows, our current coach might surprise some folks, and get this thing turned around.

The more I look at what he’s done at Ms St the more I think Mike Leach would be successful here. Many people thought that was an 0-10 team he’s coaching and yet he played Georgia and Auburn both to 1 td games.

And he did that not by trying to stall and run the ball 50 times, but by putting the ball in the air and trying to win

assuming UT sticks with tradition and goes for an "up and comer" instead of an existing HC, I would go after Kendall Briles. His body of work is pretty impressive.

My number 1 choice, is the same this time as it was 3 years ago... Chris Petersen. He's not coaching i believe hes ready and refreshed and re energized to return to coaching. Hes a proven winner and builder. He built Boise State, he built Washington. I have watched several of the behind the scenes stuff at those two programs and i just believe his personality, his energy, what he is all about, would be a PERFECT FIT here.

With that being said i believe its very realistic. i personally believe hes ready to get back into Coaching, Just looking for the right opportunity and i've heard that the SEC is intriguing to him.... I know all the smoke is about Hugh Freeze. But if i was in charge and made the decision to fire Pruitt, the first call I am making is Chris Petersen.

I just happened to come across Hugh Freeze speaking at the little rock touchdown club...He talks alot about his screwups and how he is doing everything he can to make up for it...Very good listen and if you can't picture him as a possible replacement for Pruitt then something is wrong with you...He is a perfect fit...You will need to fast forward to where he talks...Great stories in there too. But fulmer needs to leave first. He never should've made the first hire. The guy was fired for having the game pass him by. And that was 15 years ago. So we let him be out of football all those years and then stroll in amd make a hire. My god were dumb

The 2year extension should be the final mail in Fulmers AD coffin.

Last time I heard someone talking about MS St they said he had 11 freshman starting.
