Numerous names have been voiced for our new head coach. The names of Butch Davis, Chris Peterson, Brian Kelly and Steve Sarkisian have been the leaders in these discussions so lets examine Butch Davis and Chris Peterson first.
Butch Davis - Spent 6 yrs at the helm of Miami from 1995-2000, Cleveland Browns 01-04, UNC 07-08
95 record 8-3 0verall 6-1 conference UM
96 record 9-3 Overall 6-1 conference UM
97 record 5-6 Overall 3-4 conference UM
98 record 9-3 Overall 5-2 conference UM
99 record 9-4 Overall 6-1 conference UM
2000 record 11-1 Overall 7-0 conference UM
2001 record 7-9 Cleveland Browns
2002 record 9-7 Cleveland Browns
2003 record 5-11 Cleveland Browns
2004 record 3-8 Cleveland Browns
2007 record 4-8 Overall 3-5 conference UNC
2008 record 6-2 Overall 2-2 conference UNC
Chris Peterson - In just two seasons as the head coach at Boise State, Chris Petersen has already established himself as one of the top young football coaches in the country. During his 2 yr tenure at the Broncos helm, Petersen has guided Boise State to a 23-3 record and a pair of bowl game victories. His teams have been ranked in the top 25 in offense each year and 33rd or higher in defense each year. Only one coach since 1900 has won 13 games in his first season at the helm of a Division I football team. That coach was Petersen in 2006 as he led Boise State to a 13-0 record.
As I examined these 2 coaches and their body of work I would have to cast my vote for Peterson because he has done more with less. I agree some will say that Butch is more suited for the SEC but I disagree. When he was at the helm of Miami he was good but lets also consider that their is more talent in the state of Florida than Idaho. Since Butch has left Miami he has not been impressive where Peterson has recruited athletes to Boise and has done an excellent job of coaching the game. Given the talent the SEC has in it and the fact Peterson can coach his kids X's and O's plus the fact he is young I feel he could take the Vols to a new and exciting era not to mention he would cost less money then Butch.
