You have to lease an HD box from them which is not cheap. also get a hdmi cable for true HD picture.

Good chance component will give you the same picture as HDMI. Whether or not HDMI would be better depends on the box, the signals, and the TV. Most folks don't normally see a difference with short run cables versus HDMI.

Call 'em up, ask for the HD packages, and go from there. You'll get a new box and a new sat. if required. (not sure how diff sat co. handle HD signals or how old your equipment is)

Yep - you'll need the DirectTV HD receiver. Component, DVI, HDMI - all acceptable with general view that HDMI is best.

Don't pay crazy amounts for HDMI cables - you can get them online very cheap - most of what I've read is that it doesn't make a whole lot of difference since the signal is digital --- in otherwords, don't fall for the Monster Cable hype.

I don't know about direct TV but a hdmi did wonders for my hd cable box even the channels that aren't hd look considerably better.

Component is perfectly fine unless you're running a cable that is 20+ ft.

Only reason I'd go HDMI would be to knock out picture and sound with 1 cable.
