Many folks cannot tell the difference in HDMI and component as far as picture goes. It's also depends greatly on your TV set and the cable box, either of which could reduce the quality of the signal. There's additional gains from HDMI in the audio department, but most people don't have HDMI receivers nowdays. HDMI 1.3 meets specs to carry 7.1 signals uncompressed. Still, 1.3 HDMI receivers are few at the moment and pricey. HDMI is digital, meaning the signal wont be reduced by outside interference like component, composite, s-video do. If you want to compare, simply hook up some component cables. If you don't have any, a couple good pairs of RCA cables should give you the same results.

Paying more than $10 or $20 is way over-paying. If you need another one in the future, check out monoprice.com or other quality shops that the pro home theater enthusiasts love.

Newegg.com is great for most electronics, including cables. You definitely overpaid... they have a 45 ft HDMI cable for $70.

I've got HDMI from my DirecTV to my TV and the only thing about it I like is that it brings both picture and sound over..... Other than that nothing really stands out.

Monoprice is one of the best places to buy cables. I paid $30 for a 15ft HDMI cable recently. Also got a 6ft for about $15. As with all big ticket items like tools or TV's, the stores will get you on the accessories.

For the most part, it's complete "snake oil." I bought an HDMI cable at Wal Mart for 10.00 and it works great. Picture and sound are fantastic.

Think about it this way, a digital signal isn't like analogue. With analogue you can actually have varying degrees of reception quality. With digital it's basically all or nothing. You either have it or you don't. There are no degrees of quality with a digital signal.
