First we were Yay!; then we were Oh Crap! moments from the battle.

1) Crazy woman lights our swords on fire; people watching see flames go out one by one in the distance.
2) Dragon woman starts burning the enemy; Icy dragon shows with big storm up and draws here away.
3) Retreat goes well and draws enemy to moat; signal to light moat can't be seen.
4) Crazy woman lights the moat anyway; dead people make unhuman bridge.
5) Army of the living making some progress; NK reanimates all the dead so far.
6) Door to crypt holds against soldiers/wights trying to get in; dead in the crypts come to life.

I know there's more

If you watched the inside the episode I thought the weakest explanation from the guys was about the NK getting a face full of dragon breath and just smirking about it.

Basically they said we had no reason to believe he would be killed by it. There should be some explanation other than "you didn't say I couldn't".

Given that Valyrian steel was dragon-linked you'd think the WW's have some problems with dragon-related weapons. Being made of ice cubes also lends itself to vulnerability to a flame thrower.

They did walk through some fire that was set up outside the caves during the Hodor episode IIRC.

Why did the put any forces outside the battlements with a a 3 layered fortifications of wooden sand fire obstacles is another question.

All the great moments in this show were written by GRRM and I don’t think that ending last night had anything to do with him. Way to happy and convenient. Thinking back, the red wedding, jeoffrys death, Ned’s death, they all changed the show in a new direction. Unexpected and shocking used to be the theme of this show. Last night felt like an Excalibur film. Predictable.

I'm not sure if it did or didn't but the writers said they've known about this ending for 3 seasons - not sure if that takes us back to GRRM territory (S4/5) or not.

OTOH - given the NK isn't really in the books in anyway like the show it's hard to say what the whole WW v Living is envisioned to play out in the books if they ever get written.

It's just not feasible to expect the producers to finish this story on their own as GRRM would have wanted, despite whatever he might have told them about the plots/ending. I bet GRRM has struggled with how he would have tied all the stories together, because he hasn't even finished them his dang self.

Those moments changed the show because there was still plenty of show to change ... We've got three episodes left - this thing has to wrap up.

So when did Team Living learn the NK had a dragon. I know they knew they lost one; did they just assume he brought it back to life? Did they learn from some recon or from Bran?

I thought it was going to be a surprise but the writers indicated the plan was for Jon and Dany to engage the NK on his dragon rather than be in the main fight but Dany flipped out when she saw the Dothraki go down.

He literally walked through fire and put it out like 3-4 seasons ago. I kinda figured that was going to fail.

I'm not surprised the army of the dead were defeated by killing the NK. They foreshadowed that last season and the dead are far too numerous for the living to defeat. I wouldn't be surprised if that's they way GRRM does it in the books if he ever finishes them.

But I'd expect the book to be much more thorough. Maybe not Arya. Who knows.

A little relieved to see others had some difficulty with the dark episode format. For a while I was thinking it was me or my tv. Flipped off the lights in the room and that made it much better.

I agree with this completely. Although we're down to the final 3 episodes and it might be kinda hard to change the show in the way the other examples did. Hopefully I'm wrong though. Way too many "saved at the last moment" instances that imo aren't good writing.

All that said, I'm expecting the books to have a much better story and probably some very different outcomes.

Nobody besides a few weirdos want to waste 10 years watching a show where all the favorite characters die.

They knew he had a dragon after the Dragon destroyed the Wall.

I get it but dragon fire isn't regular fire - look at Harrenhal.

I'm not complaining - just thought the way the writers explained it as "we had no reason to believe it would kill him and no reason to believe it wouldn't" seemed kinda odd. They are the story authors at this point - they can invent a reason!
