HBO's "Game of Thrones"

I'm not sure Emmy voters actually watch the show. Nominations include Emilia Clarke for best supporting actress and the guy who directed the awful Dorne fight scene (what?).

Aside from the setting difference, they're pretty similar in tone. Enormous cast of characters, considered to be "realistic" and "gritty", amazingly well-acted, etc.

The difference is that The Wire is the most socially resonant TV show ever created, and is several times more complex than GoT. David Simon never compromised the integrity of the show to make it more accessible. It's one of the few shows that have legitimately changed my outlook on certain aspects of society.

Not sure we're watching the same show if you consider GoT "realistic" (even discounting the dragons and magic and setting) based on the incest and political discourse alone and most certainly the complexity of GoT is by itself at the top. We are talking the source material being longer than all religious texts after all, and its not even finished. Just because showrunners have to cut stuff doesn't change that universe.

It's definitely a more grounded and realistic approach to fantasy, mostly in characterizations and the infrastructure of the world/politics. To me its exaggeration comes mainly in the frequency of shocking events rather than the fact that they actually occurred.

I'm not arguing that The Wire is more complex than ASOIAF, because a television show will never reach that level. But the world of the novels and the world of GoT is not the same, as said by both GRRM and D&D. The showrunners are doing an excellent job considering they're short on time and money, and they certainly have an interest in attracting as many viewers as possible to cover their investment. Both of those realities necessitate less complexity by nature. That's why sex is so prevalent; yeah, it's there in ASOIAF and The Wire, but usually it isn't framed in the same way.

Finally up to episode 2 in season 4. I don't think I've ever gotten so much joy out of a character's death than when Joffrey dies.

Cersei's walk of shame pretty much downgraded her "hated GOT character". But you know she will be seeking revenge on that cult group soon.

Not for me. She got what she deserved. Didn't feel bad for her at all. But she will make someone pay. The funniest part is she is the one who put those loonies in charge.

Was honestly hoping someone ran out and gave her the ole prison shanking. Knew it wasn't going to happen, though. Think the old bird will be around a bit longer.
