Wish they could have kept Rome going, but the budget was astronomical.

i bet that it cost a great deal to make that show, but it did sort of play itself out. it was great for a few seasons and i just could not imagine how much more they could have played it out. it was still a fantastic series.

Apparently the plotlines in the works for future seasons were quite good, but the budget required was the only thing keeping it from getting made.

that is interesting. maybe they can find the time to blow their money on it again in the future. i won't be holding my breath though.

Not likely... From wiki:

Cancellation and future

HBO Chairman Chris Albrecht announced in a July 2006 news conference that season two of Rome would be its last, citing the fact that the series (called "notoriously expensive" by Broadcasting & Cable) had been developed under a two-year contract with the BBC that would have been difficult for the BBC to extend due to the series' cost. Of the storyline, co-creator Heller said:
“ I discovered halfway through writing the second season the show was going to end. The second was going to end with the death of Brutus. Third and fourth season would be set in Egypt. Fifth was going to be the rise of the messiah in Palestine. But because we got the heads-up that the second season would be it, I telescoped the third and fourth season into the second one, which accounts for the blazing speed we go through history near the end. There's certainly more than enough history to go around.

Film

In a February 2008 interview with Movieweb.com, actor Ray Stevenson stated that a Rome film was in development, with Heller working on a script.[28] Heller confirmed in December that there was "talk of doing a movie version," adding that "It's moving along. It's not there until it is there. I would love to round that show off."[27] In an April 2009 interview with AP, Actor Kevin McKidd stated the "Rome" film was "in development", and Lucius Vorenus will likely be a part of it.[29] In March 2010, Entertainment Weekly stated that Heller had completed the script for Morning Light Productions, the film's financiers, and was now awaiting a director and a studio, since HBO Films "won't be involved."

thanks for posting that info milo. i guess when they condensed all of that time into the 2nd season is my reasoning for them not going forward with it past the 2 seasons. i will say i am not sure how much i could have gotten into it if they had focused on egypt for 2 seasons anyhow. the egypt seasons might have been appealing if they changed up the characters they were to base the series on. i guess we can't pass judgement on what never happened anyways. it may have been epic for all i know. though, it will be interesting to see if a movie actually happens and how that will turn out without hbo being involved.

The stories behind Antony and cleopatra in Egypt against Octavian are definitely good enough to fill two good seasons.

Yep.

Was a great series.

The second season cut out a lot, because the proposed budget was so ridiculously large.
