Hate to say it, but this game is meaningless as far a the polls are concerned

You sure they're not holding the polls until tomorrow? It's what they did last year, held off until the last game was played.

EDIT: Just checked. Last year, it was #4 FSU vs. #11 Ole Miss on Monday night. And polls didn't come out until Tuesday.

Think they'll do the same this year.

Correct.

Wish I could decide how much emphasis to put on this game.
On one hand, there are competitive team and looking good against them would make me feel a lot better.
Otoh, it doesn't tell us much about how we will look against completely different offenses and running are normal tempo. Blowout or close win, gives very little info.

I will be filled with negativity over a loss, regardless of what it means for the SEC race or how little it matters against that offense.

Same here charger.

I don't see how guys that have no confidence in Butch and think he sucks can say we can afford to lose a season opening game, like it won't affect the team. I just don't get it.

If it wasn't Florida I would agree. I just don't think the pollsters kick them out yet. Hope you're right.

They should fall out and I think they will

The only reason I could see them still being ranked (24,25), is that the pollsters give them a pass because of the suspensions.

Losses happen. If this staff allows losing a non conference season opener to "mentally damage" our team, they should be fired on the spot. Win or lose, I think this game tells us very little about this team.

If we LOSE there will be plenty of posters TELLING us something. :)

You're misreading me. I'm not wanting anyone fired. I said if our team is so mentally weak that losing a season opener to a non-conference opponent completely derails the season, then our staff didn't do their jobs. I don't think that's going to happen, which is why I said this game kind of is meaningless in terms of what the goal is for this season.

What I'm saying is just because I don't complain about Butch and the staff in every post, doesn't mean I have full confidence in them.

If we were to lose tonight, I hope they use the loss as motivation and makes them better. Im just not comfortable with that being the case. We need this win IMO. I think we get it.

They might, but those had nothing to do with the outcome of that game. The OL was terrible.

Good take.
"If they are keeping score, it matters."

It's important to get off to a good start. Many don't like the questioning of the state of UT football or Jones future here but he needs to win games, and this one is no different. It won't win or lose you the east but to pretend it just doesn't matter for that reason doesn't make sense.

It's time to win and outside one team it's set up to do that.

It doesn't change the outcome in W/L column no. They didn't lose just because of that. But if Hurd was a reason for SC (being a cancer/distraction), this was that on steriods.

UF doesn't win that game but the reaction to how bad they looked is probably less severe.

Sets the tone for the season. Especially with it being against a very good opponent.

Agree, but I think the pollsters will consider it. It's Florida, they had suspensions and lost to a number 11 team at a neutral location. They may drop them further than my guess of 22, but I just don't see them dropping out. Actually, with our win, I hope they don't drop out.

I think losing means were in for a bad to average season. We should be able to beat Tech with a 50/50 crowd and their passing game not as dangerous as any of the SEC teams we play. We need to hold our positions and stop the run. We can't afford long runs very worried about how the linebackers will play tonight.

The only "poles" that matter tonight are the ones at the Cheetah Lounge on Spring Street in downtown Atlanta!!:)

I don't think people mind questioning the coach, it's just it doesn't need to come up in EVERY thread...

Kind of unrelated but still in the Poll subject.

How far does Florida State fall?

I think they'd lose maybe just one spot if the only problem were their loss to the Tide.

But they'll lose probably 2-3 more spots for losing their QB. Their future just isn't as bright without him.

Sucks for them to add (literal) insult to (literal) injury that way, but that's how it goes sometimes.
